A jazz piano tribute to Tony Bennett featuring Beegie Adair with The Jeff Steinberg Orchestra

Born in Cave City, Kentucky, a small farming community of 1,400 residents, Beegie Adair (pronounced B-G) grew up avidly listening to music. At age four she started the "two-finger-hunt-and-peck" system on the piano, but began actual lessons when she was five and continued studying piano through college at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green where she received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Music Education. Arriving in Nashville during the heyday of Country music allowed her the opportunity to accompany such legendary performers as Chet Atkins, Johnny Cash, and Dolly Parton. Because Nashville was a hot bed of musical television tapings and live performances during that time, Adair also worked with such entertainers as Neil Diamond, Mama Cass Elliott, and Peggy Lee in her position as in-house pianist for The Johnny Cash Show for ABC-TV plus other television programs featuring Lucille Ball, Carol Burnette, and Dinah Shore. Adair serves as adjunct professor in jazz studies at Vanderbilt University's Blair School of Music and currently teaches singers repertoire at the Nashville Jazz Workshop. Beegie credits as her main influences Jimmy Jones, George Shearing, Teddy Wilson, Tommy Flanagan, Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, and Russ Freeman (the pianist who played with Chet Baker in the Fifties).

Another gem from the creative Beegie Adair and her trio. This time, she is accompanied by Jeff Steinberg and his orchestra. A loving tribute to Tony Bennett and his illustrious career. As usual, Beegie includes one selection on the album where she plays solo piano and she picked 'I Left My Heart In San Francisco'. A beautiful rendition. This is a great album tinged with jazz overtones without losing the melodic memories of Tony's original sound. The orchestra is perfectly balanced and adds just the right touch while still allowing the familiar Beegie Adair Trio sound to shine through. If you are new to Beegie's music, this album will make you a convert to her impeccable sound and those like myself, have added it as another gem to her large catalog of great music.

If you enjoy Tony's tunes, this will not disappoint. Beegie gives all 13 numbers sensitive, yet compelling treatment as she guides the listener down memory lane. Once you get this CD in hand, the only tough part is getting it out of the soft-cardboard case. My copy fit so tightly that I am still having to work it free from the plastic spindle by using a back-and-forth circular motion to gradually raise it up and off. Thankfully, it is getting easier to remove the CD over time.

Beegie Adair is my all-time favorite artist. I enjoy piano music tremendously, and when I discovered her jazz piano renditions of the old favorites, I started buying her CDs. She records CDs of all of my favorites of days gone buy - Richard Rogers, Irving Berlin, Hoagy Carmichael, Frank Sinatra - and on and on, adding "The Good Life" tribute to Tony Bennett. Her style is wonderful, making the good old music of lyesterday come alive. I have most, if not all, of her CDs and play lthem more often than any others. I recommend these to anyway who likes music of the '50s and '60s and piano and jazz. What a great combination.
