Greta arrives at her aunt’s rundown cottage in the hinterland of New South Wales, her Aunt is famous Australian artist Millicent Osbourne and Greta arrives to open arms even if it is a total surprise to Millie. Greta needs to start afresh a new life she must leave her old life behind but first she must get a job and start paying back the people she has hurt.
Brodie Quade is an artist and her aunt’s protégé, he is a fabulous artist but lacks confidence in himself his paintings come from his heart the feelings he has for the injustices that are done in this world to other people. He lives with his family in the local caravan park that they own and works odd jobs so as he can keep painting.
Greta and Brodie are drawn together but they come from such different worlds, but they draw strength and encouragement from each other but when Greta’s past arrives and Brodie’s parent’s future is threatened Brodie begins to worry if Greta has learnt from her mistakes.
Millie is holding an art exhibition and Greta is organising it, she is working really hard to pull this off and there is an art competition that she thinks Brodie should enter, but he is not convinced and Greta makes a decision that could change everything for Brodie and them. Millie then drops her news and life is going to change for the three of them, from mistakes people can learn and move forward and find love and happiness.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story, Greta worked hard to change her life around and gave Brodie the confidence he need to excel and he was just the person to help Greta and with Millie and her support they made it. This is a story that I recommend the setting is wonderful and the characters where lovely to get to know.
A Good Life by Leanne Lovegrove beautifully encompasses the choices and decisions we make that determine the way we live and often how we die.
Greta is only 26 when she decides to stay with her elderly Aunt Millie in a rural part of Australia that is described with artistic prose. Greta needs a place to think, to feel safe and to start over. She is out on parole after being convicted of financial fraud. In fairness I feel she was a victim of a con man who she had the misfortune to love.
Aunt Millie is a famed painter who is mentoring Brodie. A diamond in the rough painter that looks more like the town brute than an artist. Moody and filled with doubt he cannot deny his chemistry with Greta but both of them have so many obstacles that love will take a back seat.
As Greta tries to navigate life as an embarrassed felon she continues to make some poor choices which aggravated me but I felt had a lot to do with her youth. As she comes to understand that love can help knock down obstacles her life begins to take form.
Though Greta and Brodie are the love story it is Aunt Millie who stole my heart. She never married but that doesn't mean she never was in love. From letters that Greta finds from famed artist Reggie to Millie we discover they had a profound relationship in Paris in 1969. I could have read a book just about their whirlwind romance. In fact the book ends with the only letter from Millie to Reggie and it sets up a path for a prequel focusing on Millie and Reggie. My heart needs to know their journey.
A Good Life will take you to the gorgeous landscapes of Australia, the beauty of an artistic Paris and a story of choices, decisions and, most importantly, love.
I received a free copy of this book from the author for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.
When word of her past makes its way through the gossip mill, she realizes starting anew won’t be that easy. Even worse, as soon as she starts to make progress and meets a man who sees her for who she is not what she’s done, her mistakes come back once again to put distance between them.
I really liked most of the characters, and even the ones I didn’t were written well. They were realistic for the most part, although aunt Millie might have been a little too great. Even the major drama was not beyond the realm of possibility. Don’t fret however, it is still an endearing break from reality for most everyone. It is sweet, romantic, heartfelt and dreamy love story.
Full disclosure - I received an ARC copy but the review is all my own.
