I read this book while I was sick with Covid, and was so glad because these lovely characters became my companions while I was in quarantine. Audrey is a high society octogenarian with a passion for art and philanthropy, but there is a part of her that is walled off and unreachable -- the only way one can be when holding a secret. A caretaker befriends Audrey, softening her emotional barriers, and seeking both to protect Audrey, and to understand her.
As Audrey's story unfolds, we learn about her time as a young nurse in the Philippines during World War Two, the great love she found there, and the two best friends she made while surviving the trauma of war. What we don't know until the very end, is what happened to these people, and why they are never mentioned in Audrey's present day life.
This a ultimately a story about the power of friendship, the lifelong bonds that women create, the things we share, and the things we hide. A beautiful read...

The main thing I look for in a novel is character development which is exactly what you’ll get with "The Good Luck Stone." From the opening sentence to the last line Heather Bell Adams weaves a tale through time that captures the essence of what a true heroine is. Audrey Thorpe, the story’s protagonist, is a gentile southern lady with a secret (no spoilers here)… a secret that compels you to keep turning pages. As her journey takes us back to her days as a nurse during WWII you’ll find components of the human spirit that will inspire even the hardest of hearts. Self-sacrifice and compassion are only the tip of the complex iceberg that is Audrey. Through a range of beautifully written supporting characters (Laurel, Deanna…) you’ll find a continuous thread of love and commitment. Along with a mastery of character development, you’ll also experience a storyline full of unique twists and turns that will easily provoke the proverbial “I didn’t see that coming!”

I can easily see this becoming a movie. After the release of Reese Witherspoon’s “Where the Crawdads Sing” she should take a look at “The Good Luck Stone.” On a side note, my wife informed me just yesterday that a recent book club she was in said they had read TGLS and all eight members gave it 5 stars! Thank you Heather Adams… we’re all anxiously awaiting your next book!!!

Heather Bell Adams has done it again with her second novel; she’s created a world so compelling that I found myself thinking and caring immensely about the characters long after I’d stopped reading. In The Good Luck Stone, not only do we have dual locations (Savannah and the South Pacific) narratively, but we also switch between time periods, each with a set of secondary characters (including Kat and Penny in the past during World War II and Laurel and her son, Oliver, in the present) that interact with Audrey, a ninety year-old lady lauded by Southern society. But Audrey isn’t a caricature; as a protagonist, she is as nuanced as any you’ll find. We delve deeply into her friendships and family, and into the complex motivations for her interactions and choices. One of the gifts of this novel is that the larger historical and social contexts that inform Audrey’s relationships ignite the plot with numerous marvelous moments. These moments provide catalysts for the reader to not only feel real empathy for Audrey and the rest of the characters, but to cerebrally engage in a kind of intellectual analysis of and discourse with “big topics” such as feminism, class/social structure, and the all-encompassing questions of sacrifice, honesty/secrets/morality, life, and death. In a novel this deftly drawn, the idea of friendship also becomes a “big topic” and most certainly worthy of a book club discussion. Friendship, displayed in a multi-faceted fashion across time, is in many ways the fulcrum of the novel. Consider the depth of connection at the heart of this passage where Audrey and her best friends and fellow nurses during the war decide to volunteer together for a harrowing assignment : “Straight into it, whatever might come, whatever bloodiness waited. She’d come for this, not to tidy supply closets and dress up for parties. She nudged Kat who silently touched Penny’s wrist. The three of them raised their hands in unison.” This book as a totality--with its literary aesthetics, truly lyrical moments, and concurrent plot-driven, page-turning allure—is definitely perfect for a book club. Since Adams employs such imagistic prowess with her divine descriptions set against a backdrop of exotic locations throughout, it’s also easy to imagine this magnificent novel as a movie. I hope that comes to fruition in order to bring this magical story to an even wider audience.

Independence. This is the key theme running through his enchanting story of Audrey Thorpe who now at ninety, is threatened with losing just that. There is more to Audrey than being the matriarch of one of Savannah's rich old families, spending her time hosting art exhibits and garden club socials. Audrey has a secret that haunts her from the days when she was a WWII nurse in the Philippines. With her health failing, she fears she won't be able to right the wrong she did years ago, but when her family hires Laurel to take care of Audrey, a bond forms between Audrey and Laurel and Laurel helps her friend find the woman from her past. Once there were three young nurses bound by friendship, each having an identical jade broach. Seventy years later, Audrey puts on her broach and begins her journey to find her lost friends.
With beautiful descriptions and real-to-life characters, this time-slip novel is a joy to read.
