Arturo’s Buttermilk Poppy Seed Waffles
Arturo took a break from the Sunday crossword to make breakfast. As he buttered his waffle, he puzzled over the answer for 24-down: a six-letter word for a type of root or meal. “the meanings of words are serious things, you know,” Arturo said… after talking all day, he was thirsty for buttermilk. —Eudora Welty, The Shoe Bird, 1964
Carrye’s Sugar Lump Biscuits
Carrye preferred that taste of tart over sweet and all the things you find at the five and dime. She loved the way her hands smelled like candy after grating the rind off lemons to make her signature biscuits. In the heart of each one was a tart lemon surprise that drew lips into a pleasing pucker.
Eliza’s Saltine Quail
Eliza had quite a large collection of ceramic birds. Each of them had a favorite food. Polly the Bluebird’s was, of course, crackers. Not just any crackers, mind you. Polly had a taste for those high-dollar water crackers with sesame seeds. Eliza finally wised up to Polly’s expensive taste after finding what amounted to an entire sleeve of saltines behind the china cabinet.
Josephine’s Chocolate Omelet Flambé
Earlier in the day, Josephine cleaned up at the half-off holiday chocolate sale at the Rexall. Once she had her way with it, it sure wouldn’t taste like a bargain. So she decided to cap off the night with a flourish. Josephine threw a little party for herself and served all of her favorite foods.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 22, 2021What goes better with good food than good art! The recipes in this book are wonderful! I have tried several of them. But the art is even better! Fun, funky in some cases, amazing art coupled with charming dialogue made this much more than a cookbook for me. Amy and Martha are both truly talented on their own but putting them together in this book was genius. It has become a favorite on the recipe book shelf and a favorite book to give.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2020This book was a gift and it is an absolute gem from cover to cover. Part art gallery, storytelling at its finest but most importantly an incredibly wonderful group of recipes you'll actually enjoy making and your friends will rave at. Start with the raspberry curd, you'll truly wonder where it's been all your life.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 15, 2020Not as many southern recipes as I thought but it is still good cookbook with good stories
- Reviewed in the United States on November 5, 2020Amazing! One day you can flip through it to look at the art, another to read the stories, and another to find and try a new recipe. I don't have any other cookbooks that offer so much. If you're a fan of southern cooking (and who isn't?) or if you appreciate the perspective of those who combine art with life, this book is a must. I've given it as a gift to three other people and they have all raved about it.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 18, 2020I loved the art and the back stories. May even try the recipes, but it isn't necessary to enjoy this beautiful book.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 24, 2021I love the character names, appreciation for homemade mayonnaise, and down home recipes.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 3, 2020Disappointing. I thought it would include stories of southern food but instead it has vignettes of characters the authors created and only briefly describes the food. I do not particularly care for the paintings that accompany the text-a bit too cutesy for my taste. This is not what I expected.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2020This cookbook was not for me. I live in the south and normally enjoy southern cooking but none of these recipes appealed to me and I had no desire to try any of them. I did really enjoy the illustrations and the stories about the recipes. I do wish there were some illustrations of the dishes. It is a cute cookbook and will appeal to southern cooking and vintage recipes fans.
