Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In this hibernation tale, Mother Bear attempts to put down her cub for the winter. "The story is a welcome addition to the bedtime genre, one parents will be glad to have as a resource when it's time to get their own little ones to nod off," wrote PW. Ages 2-6.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-K-A worthy addition to the many tales about recalcitrant bed-goers. Winter is coming and Baby Bear's mother leads him to their cave to hibernate. However, the cub wants a drink, a snack, and then the moon itself before he can go to sleep. Mother Bear affectionately copes with all of his demands, coming up with imaginative solutions, until Baby Bear finally settles down. Asch uses more varied art techniques than in his previous titles (sponges, acrylic paint, bristol board) and a larger format, but with the same outstanding results-a simple text, large illustrations, elegant format, and definite child appeal. Perfect for reading aloud at tucking-in time, this story will also be a good choice for units on the changing seasons.

Frank Asch's _Good Night Baby Bear_:
Baby Bear doesn't want to go to sleep in the cave. He has a litany of complaints/stalling tactics, including needing water, needing food, and needing to see the moon. Ingenious (and patient!) mother bear satisfies each request, and eventually mother bear and baby bear fall asleep happily.
A good offering from Frank Asch. Illustrations are bold and blocky, with nothing terribly intricate or cluttered about them. Text is easy to understand, with just a sentence or two on each page. Great for 2- and 3-year olds, maybe a solid bedtime book for 4- and 5-year olds as well.
I've used this as a bedtime book with my 2-year old many times, and he seems to like it quite a bit, though it's not his favorite.
Be sure to also check out Frank Asch's _Goodbye House_, which I think is his best book.

When the snows began to fall, Mother Bear led Baby Bear into a cave. But, things are so different in here that Baby Bear just can’t seem to fall asleep. And so, Mother Bear does everything she can to make him feel right. But, OH!, will Baby Bear ever fall asleep?

I must admit that I love this book. The little one waking you up because he or she can’t sleep – doesn’t that just sound too familiar? I really enjoyed the love that Mother Bear shows, and the relationship between the mother and baby bears (mind you, I wouldn’t have minded if there was a Father Bear, but you can’t have everything, I suppose). My daughter loves the cute story, which is a real plus.

The illustration work is very good, with lots of big, colorful pictures for the young reader (er, readee?). My daughter and I both highly recommend this book.

My daughter and I just checked this book out of the library, but a month isn't enough....so I am buying it for her for Chrstmas. The best part of the book is Mother Bear's loving way with her baby bear who doesn't want to go to sleep any more then my daughter does, but ultimately, sleep prevails...for both of them..:) Definitely reccomended!

My son and I read this almost every night. The relationship between the mother and baby bear is so sweet and when baby bear gives his Mom a kiss on the nose at the end, my son does the same! Very sweet book with simple, pretty illustrations. This is one of our favorites.

My sons and I love this book right before bed. It's quiet and simple to read and look at. We like to giggle at the things that Baby Bear asks for (since the boys do much the same) and talk about how Mommy Bear always helps them. We share kisses at the end and they seem very responsive to the loving exchange between Mommy and Baby. This is a great book for reading between moms and kids.

I love this book because just like my daughter, this cub always needs one last thing before bed - better lighting, a drink of water, etc. My daughter is now 7 and we still pull this one out at bedtime after five years of reading it. She thinks the cub is cute and seems to be able to relate. This book has stood the test of time in our house and I highly recommend it.
