The very best part of this ebook are the beautiful illustrations. They are in color and very nicely done. If you look carefully there are even little insects and pretty flowers in the grass. Lots of fun little details drawn in so kids can spend some time looking at the drawings. My niece loved the lady bugs and the fire flies. Very cute.
Review by children's author Deanie Humphrys-Dunne
It is bedtime for little monkey, but he is not ready for bed. He tells the snake he is hungry. He tells the jackal that his tummy hurts, and then he tells the porcupine that he is wet. His mother feeds him, massages his tummy and changes him. Now the greyhound asks if he is ready for bed. No, little monkey needs a bedtime story with “dwarves and fairies”. As his mom finally settles him for the night, he says he has something important to tell her. He wants to tell his mom that he loves her.
I was so impressed by this children’s book. It is simply precious. The illustrations are equally intriguing.
If you are looking for a calming, comforting book to put a small child to bed, this is an excellent choice. This is a book to treasure and read over and over again to your child.
The illustrations are endearing in simplicity and emotion. But the size of the lettering is too small and boring. The lines need to flow around the page, suggesting movement and speech.
Combining her art and her poetry, Helen H. Wu creates a unified vision of a magical forrest where the characters, who are so much alike us, live. Mother monkey holds her little child, who doesn't want to go to sleep, and she whispers to him, ever so softly:
Hush my little monkey
Your tummy needs some rubbing
Hush my little monkey
Close your eyes and sleep till morning
Her voice is so soothing, yet the little one does his best to delay the moment of going to sleep, to cling to his mama a bit longer.
The little monkey yawns
I’m ready to sleep to dawn
For first, mama dear
There’s something you need to hear
In the lovely illustrations you’ll find the blue night sky, where stars are atwinkle, the leaves swaying with a rustle, and the moon, rising radiantly above the branches.
Delightfully illustrated this book has some strange punctuation. When the "visiting" creature asks a question, it is well punctuated. When the baby or mommy monkey speak, there is none apart from a period at the end of the four line stanza.
Amazon has this listed as suitable for 0-7 years old. In my opinion 0-4 years would be more appropriate. Great bedtime story for little ones.
PLEASE note that this book is not suitable for all devices. Please check above before purchasing to ensure you are not disappointed. Book review was requested by the author when the book was available as a free download. Thanks, Liz
What little child wouldn't like a monkey in a story for them?
Most highly recommended.
