Born in 1905 of poor Romanian Jewish immigrants in London’s East End Sam Berkovitz lived through uncertain employment and poverty, rent strikes and the rise of fascism. Having joined the Communist Party he describes their disparate attempts to resist the local fascist Blackshirt march of Mosley, fight Franco in the Spanish Civil War and eventually Hitler.Sam lived in New York for five years and describes the effects of the Great Depression. He returned to east London and although over-age and partially blind, succeeded in enlisting in the army during World War II. Having spent three years in India and Burma he graphically describes the horror of fighting in the disease-ridden tropics. Afterwards came the struggle to survive in the ravaged East End. Simon Blumenfeld transcribed Sam’s experiences in his colourful, literary style, bringing to life the characters, places and episodes. It is a story of struggle, poverty and resistance; but is also a book about friendship, loyalty and social cohesion among the disadvantaged. It is a fitting tribute to them both.

Fascinating account by a man who witnessed key aspects of early 20th century history
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 30, 2020Verified Purchase
We see various aspects of early 20th century through the lively narrator's eyes, starting with his early life as part of the East End Jewish community. When he seeks to make his way in New York, Sam witnesses the 1929 Wall Street Crash and its consequences. He describes his time in the communist party and the resistance to Oswald Mosley's fascists. And he tells of his time as a WW2 soldier in India and Burma and his life on homecoming. His was a life lived with courage, resilience and good humour-the book is a fitting memorial.
