Great Album, Horrible Media

On the topic of the music, this is just another solid release from Homeboy Sandman. Great production throughout, and our protagonist rhymes like no other. HS is truly one of Hip-Hop's most under-appreciated acts; this he has proven with every release, and "The Good Sun" is no different.

As for the media, I feel a little ripped off after paying ~$19 for a poorly manufactured CD-R copy of the album. Had I noticed that "This product is manufactured on demand when ordered from Amazon.com." I would have looked elsewhere. This is the poster child for blurry cover bootlegs. A quick spectral analysis of the audio doesn't provide great results either; there's a sharp cutoff around 21 kHz. I've heard worse, but I'm not sure that I buy into Amazon's claim that these "CDr on-demand" releases are created from a lossless source. It's also very possible that there just isn't much information above 21k on this album, or even that the original pressing was created from a lossy master, but I'm still skeptical.

After seeing the poor quality of this version, I immediately sought out a copy of the original pressing elsewhere. I will update this review once I have received it and had a bit of time to compare the two.

In short, fantastic album from one of Hip-Hop's hidden treasures, but a disappointing physical copy.

Update!:
I received a copy of the original pressing of this album. Sadly, my suspicions were correct. The poorly packaged version that I bought here from Amazon for ~$19 was indeed created from a lossy source. I've attached a picture comparing the two using track #3, "Not Pop." Shame on you, Amazon.

Sandman's most consistent album to date.

I'm a sucker for technical skill, and Sandman is top-notch. Internal rhyme, crazy cadences, alliteration, punchlines...he's got a unique knack for rhyming things that sound exactly the same...it's wordplay, but taken to another level ("Low Co.", "Calm Tornado", anything he rhymes on). With that said, this album's got his humor ("Mean Mug"), his Native Tongues-ish vibe ("Strange Planet"), personal narratives ("Being Haved", "Listen"), food for thought ("Angels With Dirty Faces"). This is the range of stuff you expect and deserve when you buy a rap album.

He doesn't go over whack beats either, a common theme for the vast majority of his records. I'm not going to try and describe beats, but again, there's something for everyone. Besides the rhymes, I think this album stands out a bit more from his others in its sonic coherence (there's no "Cedar and Sedgwick" or "Let's Get 'Em" on this one).

If you haven't heard Boy Sand, I would definitely recommend this album for your first listen over his other full-lengths. It's his most consistent LP, perhaps a bit more accessible to a newbie, but also diverse enough to give you a taste of his wide range of incredible skills/strengths. If you have heard him, why read this? You know how ridiculously skilled and progressive he is...buy it.

The Great Sun

I picked this album up on a humbug and my GOODNESS this may very well be the best hip hop album I've heard this year and that's in the wake of the new Reflection Eternal, "Revolutions Per Minute" (which is a great album) and the B.o.B. "The Adventures of Bobby Ray," which is also no slouch. "The Good Sun" offers you beats that come out of left field but hit dead center and a lyrical content and dexterity that you probably haven't heard since Eminem or Pharoahe Monch. The album cover itself reminded me of Sun Ra's "Space is the place," or Grover Washington Jr's "Mister Magic" and in the vein of those two artists this album is more a piece of artistic expression than just hip hop to make you dance or bounce or whatever. This is the thinking man's hip hop album you can't check your brain at the door and just snap your way through it, you can't sip on sizurp and mind haze your way through it, you've got to tune it in, turn it on and that other stuff, drop it out (shout out to Timothy Leary).

To all of you young rap fans who think rapping about guns, women, and bricks is hardcore hip hop, you're wrong. Hardcore hip hop is defined by a sound and spirit, which is exactly what this is. Even though I don't like every song here, (maybe only half the album), I can appreciate them all because dude is actually displaying intelligence in his rhymes (what a novel concept) and his production is true New York Street s*&t: melodic but rough. Check for this man, he's helping try to bring Hip Hop and creative, progressive street music back. Support.
