5.0 out of 5 stars A book of reviews and interviews with no holds barred - Review by Sam Firstenberg
The Good, the Tough & the Deadly by David J. Moor has the most comprehensive list of action movies ever compiled in a single book. Every action flick from the 60s, 70s and all the way up 2015 is listed, be it a small or a big one, major studio or independently produced, you name it they are here. Listed alphabetically, each and every one includes a summarized description and short review by the author. Every so often throughout the book David surprises the reader with interviews he conducted himself with some of the significant players in the field of action cinema; directors, producers, actors, and action stars such as Michael Dudikoff, Cynthia Rothrock, Mark Dacascos, and Jeff Speakman. Also action writers like James Bruner, and Paul DeMielche, producers Gideon Amir and Boaz Davidson, and action directors the likes of Shredon Lettiche, Isaac Florentin and myself amongst many, many more. The interviews follow the relevant movies and are great fun to read. The author is honest and at times even brutal with his review and questions; nothing is sugar coated, he writes it the way he sees it and asks the questions that need to be asked - no holds barred - and that makes for a great read. In addition there are tons of great photos to jog the reader’s memory.
This book sheds light on the ins and outs of how action movies are made in Hollywood, the intricacies of the wheeling and dealing, the rise and fall of action stars, and the complexity of presenting them to a potential audience. I enjoyed reading the interviews thoroughly and along the way even finding out a thing or two I didn’t know about the movies I directed myself.
If you are a true action movies enthusiast, this book should definitely be in your library!

- Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2018I've only had a few hours with this book in my possession, but I spent a bit of time with it in the bookstore before I ordered it.
The best part of this book is the sheer volume of reviews for films that many of us would never have heard of before this wonderful text existed. However, equally fantastic is the fact that it's so honest. Many of these films mentioned are really not good - some of them downright terrible. The acting, the writing, the directing, etc. The authors do not hold back. When it's a bad film, even from a director or lead actor that they like, the authors don't hesitate to say it's garbage. This is an honesty that is often missing in texts like this, particularly when it's aimed at a specific niche.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2016I love action movies. I have written action movies and I thought that I knew a lot about them and that I had seen most of the ones made. Then I got David J. Moore's book and discovered boy, was I wrong! The book is a veritable encyclopedia of the action movies of the last 50 years. Some were old favorites, some I had heard about, some I had forgotten, but there were literally hundreds that I didn't know existed. Besides featuring new reviews of all of the films, there are revealing interviews with many of the people who wrote, produced, crewed, directed and starred in them. If you love action movies, you must get this book. As for me, I'm heading back to the Blu-ray player and a stack of newly discovered action DVD's I can't wait to see.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2016Growing up in the video store era I spent a lot of time in the action section. At my local mom & pop it was the largest section they had and I loved grabbing arm loads of direct to video fun. I spent many summers grabbing everything that looked good. Fast forward to today and I've realized that there were so many great action flicks that I missed in my youth. There are actors, like Gary Daniels, that released lots of fun flicks that I simply didn't have access to. American action films are an undocumented phenomenon in cinema and frankly its tough to know what to watch. Enter The Good, The Tough, The Deadly: Action Movies & Stars 1960's – Present by David J. Moore. It's my new favorite thing.
The Good, The Tough, The Deadly is an exceptional guide to action movies. It's what guys like me have been waiting for their whole lives. The book is a massive 560 pages and the size of the book covers your whole lap. It's a giant tome dedicated to action heroes. The book also features contributions from Zack Carlson, Vern, and Mike McBeardo McPadden. Main author Moore has assembled an A-Team of cult cinema writers to make this the definitive guide to action films. I have never seen a book so thorough and well layed out. Well except for Moore's previous book World Gone Wild. This book is full color with poster art and rare stills, printed on nice glossy paper with a heavy hard back. It's a high quality product that matches the content. The content of the book consists of several hundred reviews for every action flick I could possibly think of. The introduction claims that the book reviews over 1,500 in fact. I would believe it. This book is massive. Much like with World Gone Wild, the book is very comprehensive in that respect. The book also features in depth reviews with action stars, directors, and assorted crew. It was fun nerding out on interviews with actors that never get interviewed anywhere, the unsung heroes have finally been given the opportunity to speak. It's amazing.
If you're looking for a book about action films, you couldn't possibly find a better book on the subject. In fact, this book is so good, so well written, so comprehensive, I doubt it will ever be topped. That's not hyperbole, it's just a fact. I 100% recommend that you buy this book with no reservations or caveats. It's perfect.

PatrikReviewed in the United Kingdom on January 11, 20255.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Collection of Action Movies & Stars
The book is exactly as advertised, a massive collection of more than a thousand movies and hundreds of actors from the last five decades. The cover art and the interior print quality are all very premium, making the price justified. You can feel the work that went into its creation on every page.
Highly recommended for fans of the genre.

Mike HallReviewed in Canada on April 29, 20175.0 out of 5 stars A great book to have around the house
A great book to have around the house. The reviews are very brief but there are good interviews with actors, directors, etc that supplement the reviews very well. For example, the first page I flipped to was a review of Death Grip followed by an interview with Eric Jacobus, the star and director of Death Grip. So I checked out Eric Jacobus on youtube and holy crap that guy is amazing. So that was pretty much worth the cost of the book alone.
