A Good Walk Spoiled: Days and Nights on the PGA Tour Paperback – Bargain Price, June 1, 1996

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 583 ratings

In the highly acclaimed bestseller A Good Walk Spoiled, John Feinstein captures the world of professional golf as it has never been captured before. Traveling with the golfers on the PGA Tour, Feinstein gets inside the heads of the game's greatest players as well as its struggling wannabes. Meet superstars like Nick Price, who nailed a fifty-foot putt at the seventeenth to win the British Open, and Paul Azinger, who marked his return from a bout with cancer with an emotional appearance at the Buick Open. Go behind the scenes for Davis Love III's unforgettable come-from-behind victory in the Ryder Cup. In golf, Feinstein eloquently relates, the line that separates triumph from disappointment is incredibly fine. "One week you've discovered the secret to the game; the next week you never want to play it again".

Amazon.com Review

On those magnificent days on which your drives split the fairway down the middle and your wedge shots leave you putting for birdie, you think: "I wonder if I could do this for a living." After all, guys in their 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60s, guys no one heard of until recently, are making planeloads of money on the various golf tours (and buying private planes to take them from one big-money tournament to the next). A Good Walk Spoiled is a bit of a reality check. John Feinstein chronicles the struggles of the top golfers in the game, as well as those trying to get onto the PGA Tour. These are gifted players who've devoted their lives to the game, and on any given day they could just flat out stink. A Good Walk Spoiled is a completely engaging book from first page to last, a wonderfully observed and masterfully told story of pain and profit in the world's most frustrating sport.

From Publishers Weekly

Following the events of one year on the PGA tour, sportswriter Feinstein tells of the nerve-racking pressures and successess of professional golf.

Another golf book, and I thought it would be more of the same old same old...man was I ever wrong. Feinsteins "A Good Walk Spoiled" must have Super Glue spread all over the cover. I simply could not put it down. From page one to the end Feinstein has you in his grasp, or grip because we're talking about a golf book. This is the best writing on golf that I have ever read. The inside dope on the players et al is eye-opening. You thought you knew these players from seeing them on TV, think again. Buy the book and read and read and read. You will have no regrets...that's a promise and I don't make promises lightly. The last promise I made were my marriage vows.

I love golf books. This one is not my favorite. A collection of stories regarding now dated pros. It’s ok. I’ll make it to the end of it. It won’t take a prime spot on the shelf, though it will add to my overall perspective of the game. It won’t do much of anything to improve my game. It’s not the point of the book. I will probably never look at it again, once I get through it.

I met John Feinstein once - great guy. My boyfriend is the golfer, but not a reader. Got him this to read as he's going through, ahem, chemo. And he's loving it! I knew I could count on John, his fabulous writing, and this great topic!

When you watch golf on TV, you hear about this playing doing this, or that player doing that, but you almost never get any back story or context to how they got there. This is an aggregate of many players' stories and if you are a golf fan, it's a good read. There are many sports writers... but very few who go beyond the game itself, but Feinstein is one of them. It's not the greatest book every written (so no 5 stars) but for the category, it's pretty good.

Brilliant, reread this after fifteen year interval. Feinstein gets to golfers human heart, the silent terror they all face.

If you only read one book about golf this is the one.
