- Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2019For some kids transition times are especially difficult and big changes can be challenging for all children. The book gentle shows one girl (Franny) working through the process of leaving her school. It follows Franny working through her own unique process of saying goodbye. The author (Lippert) is a therapist and offers additional suggestions for helping children cope in the back. Bishop's gentle illustrations capture just the ride mood for this book. It's a lovely story all on its own and the little slice of bibliotherapy will be helpful for families going through changes.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2019I have looked forward to holding Goodbye, School in my lap and turning the pages. As a member of the author’s critique group, I have witnessed the story become solid and strong like Franny. Goodbyes and changes are difficult for us all. Franny moves through her school taking in breaths of strength as she embraces the memories of her classroom, teacher and friends. With the treasures in her heart and pocket, she is ready to say goodbye. May we all be inspired by Franny’s imagination and spirit.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2019This is another entry in the excellent series of books published by the American Psychological Association. Goodbye, School is about Franny who is leaving her school. The reader does not know why but assumes that she is most likely moving. In any event, the reason matters less than the process.
This story is about the importance of saying goodbye, not being whisked away. Even with sadness, the ritual is important. The reader watches as Franny revisits her classroom, sees her teacher and spends time outside. She says her final goodbye when she is ready.
As always, there is a helpful section for caregivers at the end of the book.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this e-galley in exchange for my honest review.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2019Change can be challenging for children of all ages. This is especially true when they are moving away, leaving school and friends behind, or have a friend who is moving away. Goodbye, School offers an example of an emotionally healthy way for a child to acknowledge the difficulty of that change and move on.
As a child, we moved a lot, and every time, at every age, it was painful. I remember every single move, starting in kindergarten, and not in a positive way. If my parents had a book like this, maybe those transitions would have been smoother, maybe the moves wouldn’t have left scars.
While the story itself would be helpful to young children, I think the section in the back, directed to the parents, would be even more so. It has wonderful advice, from an expert in psychology, on ways in which this type of experience can be made easier for kids. Honestly, the last two pages are just as critical as the example provided in the story, and I love that this type of advice is being made so accessible.
A great book for families who are making a move or for children who have a friend who is moving away.
Note: I received this book from the publisher via NetGalley. I pride myself on writing fair and honest reviews.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 30, 2019This story is chock full of beautiful situations, colorful imagery, and sweet emotions. The storyline encourages children to actively be in the present moment, to fully appreciate their environment, and to be mindful of and grateful for the many gifts they have every day. Since we never know when we will have to say farewell, "Goodbye, School" reminds children and adults to enjoy the precious yet simple things in life every day.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2019Goodbye, School is the perfect book for young children who are preparing to transition to a new school. Franny is at her school one last time. She reflects on her passed experiences and even leaves a goodbye gift for her classmates. I highly recommend this book. The illustrations and story are wonderful. There is even a reader’s note at the end for parents.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2019I will be welcoming GOODBYE, SCHOOL into my school library. What a wonderfully illustrated story! Through-out the school year, my site has a lot of students transferring in, out and sometimes back again. Even if a student reading GOODBYE, SCHOOL has never had to leave one school and be a new student at another, my hope it that it'll help them foster empathy for those new students. And for those new students, my hope it that they'll be able to relate to Franny and find comfort.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 9, 2019I loved this thoughtful, beautifully illustrated children's book! It's about a little girl named Franny facing a change with her school and having to say good-bye to a place filled with memories and friends. This book was wonderful, and also had pages at the end for the adults helping a child face change and losing something they love in a positive way.
