In his sophomore work, author Ty Roth successfully weaves both classic and contemporary themes into a tapestry that is resoundingly relevant to today. As the NFL reluctantly makes changes in the wake of headlining stories about the lasting effects of repeated blows to players' heads, little has been done to protect athletes at the high school level. It's true that concussion awareness and recognition is on the rise. And, "safe tackling" and "concussion proof" helmets are being employed. Whether these changes will be enough will ultimately be answered as explosive research now being conducted in these areas bears fruit. But, will new efforts to protect youths and their growing brains be enough?
A midst this real-life controversy, the young Farrell is the classic doomed hero whom the gods have chosen to cast down as he reaches his zenith. Prescription pain killer addiction, a titanic issue in its own right, complicates his fall from goodness. Along the way, the reader has to decide if the supernatural elements seemingly at play are Shakespearean or just symptoms of TJ's injuries. The supposed invulnerability of youth is on display, even when it's suddenly cut short.
This was a lightning read that I read in one sitting. If the above isn't enough, even the Angel of Death dogs TJ in Roth's "Goodness Falls."
As a teenager, I definitely related to this book. Of course, not with the drugs and such, but with the expectations that adults have for me. It is hard to put into words exactly how this book impacted me. This is probably the hardest review on a book I have written! But not because it was a bad book; it was completely the opposite! Those people who have read So Shelly and then this would probably agree with me in saying that it was just as good. That is what I think anyway. Sorry this review is so choppy and random, but the only thing I can think to say about Goodness Falls is that it is amazing! Just that one single word sums up what I thought as I finished it. It took me one day, and not because it was a little shorter than what I normally read, but because I could not put it down! Ty is such an amazing, talented writer, and I am so lucky to have met him and have been honored enough to speak with him about his writing. All in all, this book is definitely one I would recommend to anyone of any age. I cannot wait to see what Ty has in store for the future!
