Product description
Meet Pixel 4a with 5G, the essential Google phone. It has the helpful stuff you need in a cell phone, with an extra boost of 5G speed. So you can download a movie in seconds, enjoy smooth streaming, and play your favorite games. Pixel 4a with 5G also takes amazing ultrawide photos in any light, keeps your data safe, blocks robocalls, and has an all-day battery that can last up to 48 hours with Extreme Battery Saver. It’s a lot of help from Google, for a lot less than you’d expect. And it’s an unlocked smartphone, so you can choose the data plan and carrier that work for you.
[1] Works with all major carriers. Contact carrier for details. 5G service is carrier dependent.
[2] Requires a 5G data plan (sold separately). 5G service and roaming not available on all carrier networks or in all areas. Contact carrier for details about current 5G network performance, compatibility, and availability. Phone connects to 5G networks, but 5G service, speed, and performance depend on many factors including, but not limited to, carrier network capabilities, device configuration and capabilities, network traffic, location, signal strength, and signal obstruction. Actual results may vary. Some features not available in all areas. Data rates may apply.
[3] Download speed claims based on testing videos from three streaming platforms. Average download time was less than sixty seconds. File sizes varied between 449MB and 1.3GB. Download speed depends upon many factors, such as file size, content provider and network connection. Testing conducted in an internal 5G network lab and on pre-production hardware in California in July/August 2020. Actual download speeds may be slower.
[4] Enabling gameplay with cellular data may increase your mobile data usage up to 2.7GB/hr. Gameplay is service-, network-, connection-, and game-dependent, and may not be available for all games in all areas. Users may experience inconsistent gameplay. Stadia requires account creation.
[5] Hotspot capability subject to carrier plan.
[6] For “All day”: Maximum battery life based on testing using a mix of talk, data, standby, and use of other features. Testing conducted on two major carrier networks using Sub-6 GHz non-standalone 5G (ENDC) connectivity. For “Up to 48 hours”: Maximum battery life based on testing using a mix of talk, data, standby, and use of limited other features that are default in Extreme Battery Saver mode (which disables various features including 5G connectivity). Testing conducted on two major carrier networks. For both claims: Pixel 4a (5G) and Pixel 5 battery testing conducted by a third party in California in mid 2020 on pre-production hardware and software using default settings, except that, for the “up to 48 hour claim” only, Extreme Battery Saver mode was enabled. Battery life depends upon many factors and usage of certain features will decrease battery life. Actual battery life may be lower.
[7] Android version updates for at least 3 years from when the device first became available on the Google Store in the US. [8] US only. English only. Call Screen may not detect all spam calls.
[9] Screen sharing not available on group calls. Requires Wi-Fi or 5G internet connection. Not available on all apps and content. Data rates may apply. 5G service, speed and performance depend on many factors including, but not limited to, carrier network capabilities, device configuration and capabilities, network traffic, location, signal strength, and signal obstruction.
[10] Some third-party apps and data may not be transferred automatically.
[11] Subscriptions may be required.
[12] Compared to MSRP of unlocked Pixel 5 phone on the Google Store in the US. Requires a 5G data plan (sold separately). Data rates may apply.[13] Not available for all apps and content. Display automatically adjusts to optimize for best viewing and battery performance.
[14] Qualcomm Snapdragon is a product of Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. and/or its subsidiaries. Qualcomm and Snapdragon are trademarks of Qualcomm Incorporated, registered in the United States and other countries.
[16] Storage specifications refer to capacity before formatting. Actual formatted capacity will be less.
[17] Qi-compatible. Wireless charger sold separately.
[18] Up to 18W wired charging rates are based upon use of the included charger plugged into a wall outlet. Actual results may be slower.
[19] Charging rates are based upon use of the included charger plugged into a wall outlet. Actual results may vary.
[20] Designed to charge Qi-certified devices. Use of Battery Share significantly reduces Pixel battery life. Cases may interfere with charging and will reduce charging speed.

Don't buy the $1200 phones. If you want all the "gimmicks" then go ahead and pay the $1200. I'll never buy an expensive phone ever again!
March 6, 2021: Started testing my 2nd 5G phone: Pixel 4a 5G. Here's what I've learned so far:
PROS:
1. 5G Speed tests on Mint Mobile at suburban mountainside home: 150Mbps download. This compares to TCL 10L 4G at 9Mbps at same location.
2. Moving data & apps from prior Android phone. DO NOT USE CABLE METHOD because Android 11 failed to move over half my apps. 2nd attempt (normal side-by-side wireless transfer) worked perfectly.
3. Pixel 4a 5G camera is excellent. Reviewers have compared to $1,000 phone cams. I concur based on 40+ years as a pro photographer who owns Hasselblad gear.
4. Crash Alert feature in this phone adds peace of mind.
5. There are many case/covers available including 1 clear front & back with built-in screen protector for 6.98
6. FREE TV apps like ones on Android 9 or 10 TV boxes) work perfectly on Android 11including Cinema and LiveNetTV.
7. White balance on screen and in photos is "spot on" and as a pro photographer I am EXTREMELY critical of color accuracy.
CONS:
1. Google is too cheap to include a screen protector and TPU back cover that you even get with $100 phones
2. No smart button on left side of phone
3. No face recognition feature
4. One LED on back for camera or flashlight use
5. Fingerprint sensor is on back
SEPTEMBER 5, 2021 UPDATE: As a techaholic, I'm a beta tester for many tech companies, including Google so
I am currently running Android 12 on my 4A 5G and have yet to run into ANY issues. Android 12 seems to be about same maneuver/responsiveness speed but a bit more "refined" meaning curved corners on boxes vs. former sharp 90 degree corners. Camera seems to be doing a better job of auto white balance. Annoyed me when I'm shooting under white light and pics looked yellowish. Google seems to have fixed this in 12. Two other areas that do seem to standout as improved over Android 11 are WiFi and Bluetooth connection. Both seem to find signals quicker and Bluetooth does faster pairing. Keep in mind that all of this may not be true on other make/model Android phones. BOTTOM LINE: I liked this phone since getting it. Now I like it even more.

I've been using this phone regularly since the beginning of 2021. I have some thoughts to add and I added a star. The substance of the original review is basically the same.
Android on a Google phone is better than iOS for an every day person. If you're a "pro" then you might really want a high end iPhone, but you probably don't really need it. This phone has value. I paid $500 for the phone, a very basic case, and taxes. That's the price of a mid level Windows laptop. It's only cheap in the sense of the skewed smartphone market. For the price of a higher end iPhone (or Samsung or other higher end Android phone), you could buy this phone, Moment lenses, tripods and selfie stick, and other accessories for the same price, if not less. You can buy this phone and all the Moment lenses and still pay less for the highest end iPhone.
I still haven't used all the camera options (no real chance for astrophotography yet) but I have used the camera basically every day. The transition between wide angle, regular, and close up is intuitive and easy whether you're taking a picture or video. It occasionally gives me a live photo like option.
For regular use, there's no way I'm not going to use location for find my phone. $500 might be cheap to some people but it's not to me. If I lose the phone, I want to find it. This runs down the battery life. I have been getting excellent battery life out of the extreme battery saver lately, which I use sometimes, than I did at first; but I've also been watching less videos lately. Keep an extra charger around if you're on the go. For most people, the battery life will be the biggest issue. I highly recommend dark mode either way.
The fingerprint reader is better than face ID. It's fast and opens the phone immediately.
Google pay is easy and I've used it in multiple contexts.
Original review:
Mediocrity at its best (3 stars)
I have had this phone for a week. I have been using iPhones for the past 4 years. I had used cheap Android phones before that. My only flagship was the XS, which I would still use if the cameras still worked on it. I have an iPhone XR, which my employer pays and I use as an additional personal phone as well.
I bought the Pixel 4a 5G for 3 reasons:
1. The camera. I didn't think the camera was that great at first but it's been taking really good pictures, it's grown on me and I haven't used all the features yet. Let me compare it to the iPhone. I have small children. The iPhone is a better camera option for a parent for 1 reason - live photos. I often have to edit pictures to get a usable photo. The Pixel wins for its automatic picture quality and software but the iPhone wins because of its live features; and I really liked the Portrait mode on the XS when it worked.
2. I plan to keep it for a few years and it has 5G. The 5G capability will make it usable in 4-5 years. The phone will be updated to Android 14 and it will stay modern for a while. It's not "stock Android" on the phone, it's Android with extra Google features exclusive to Pixel phones.
3. It's a "boring" phone. I was going to buy an LG dual screen ThinQ phone. The LG has a 32 bit DAC and the dual screen is nice. However, I came to the realization that I wanted a more basic phone. Technology can be a tool and it can be a distraction. The phone has everything I need.
Android 11 vs. iOS 14:
The only real difference is the Google versus the Apple ecosystem. There are only subtle differences in the user experience. It comes down to what you like. I have an iPad Pro 9.7 and a MacBook as well. It makes more sense for me to use an iPhone as my day to day phone but I wanted to try something different, and I wanted the Pixel camera. The actual experience is similar; although I give Google a slight edge on the design.
Cons:
1. The battery life is mediocre; I gave it 3 stars just because of the advertised battery quality and my actual experience. It's worse than advertised and what the "reviewers" on YouTube have been telling us. They're reviewing on Google's platform and a lot of them are on Team Pixel. It's not "bad" but I have it on dark mode and it doesn't last a full day even with the Extreme Battery Saver mode if you use it normally.
Conclusion:
It's a phone that's good enough. It serves my needs and I plan to keep it for the next 4-5 years. My original iPhone was a SE, I had to replace it because it stopped charging, I probably would have held onto it another couple years otherwise. I don't need the latest or "bleeding edge" to serve my day to day functions. If you're on the fence between this phone and the XR (which are similar price points), then it really comes down to how invested you are in each ecosystem. Get an iPhone for iMessage or Facetime. Get the Pixel if you want the best software Google has to offer.
a. Google is censoring freedom of speech by banning social media apps it does not agree with philosophically, and
b. so is Amazon...
The phone itself is kind of cheaply made; feels flimsy. Screen brightness is lackluster compared to my wifes Note 9 and the camera lags badly when writing to the disk. Feels like a 250 dollar phone max.
Top reviews from other countries
The bad: bluetooth does not stay connected, astonishingly poor speaker performance (one speaker is significantly louder than the other), frequently drops calls, too wide to be comfortable for anyone with normal sized hands, camera performance is underwhelming, picture processing is unforgivably slow.
If you are looking for a mid-range phone to save money look elsewhere.
Moving trough app is fluid(unlike my past experience woth other brand).
Respectable price for a good little machine.
Early impression are good.
I had a small first time setup trouble were the notification would stay stuck but after 6 or 7 update it fixed itself.
