- Appears to be in good working order from a functional standpoint.
- Full complement of original accessories, not off-brand ones which could potentially damage the phone.
- Numerous chips and scratches
- Dust in places that shouldn’t have dust yet
- Weird splotches that appeared to be some kind of adhesive
- Debris in the charging port
I normally don’t write reviews since what I buy is usually already backed by a number of decent reviews or not worth reviewing anyways(ie cables, etc). Given the small number of reviews here I thought I ought to write something especially given the somewhat lackluster experience I had recently.
I ended up purchasing a unit from Magic Mobile Partners.Overall I don’t have much of a complaint on the unit I received from a functional standpoint, though I didn’t get to test too much of it given that I didn’t know I needed a nano sim and didn’t have one in the time I had the unit.
That being said my primary complaint is surrounding the overall marketing of these units and what constitutes “certified refurbished”. Regarding the unit I received - the only form of refurbishment I could see was that the software had been reset to factory settings. I wouldn’t mind this if I had bought the phone from a place like, Ebay for example, but given that it was given the moniker “certified refurbished” I was expecting a little more work to have been done.
Why do I think that the unit wasn’t put through a proper refurbishment process? When I saw the unit, there were multiple chips and dings on the metal band running along the bottom bezel as well as scratches at various points on the phone. Assuming things had been replaced or repaired, for it to still have that much wear seems strange.
Dust - dust was everywhere. I knew it couldn’t have come from me since I couldn’t even use the phone yet(no nano sim so no reason to carry around in my pocket) Dust was trapped between the bezel and the screen, dust was over the screen, dust was just about everywhere I looked.
Scattered on the phone in various spots, I could see some kind of adhesive, that or sticky residue of lord knows what left over from a previous owner.
All in all, this was not a device that could be considered “certified refurbished” in my opinion. I knew going into the purchase that this would be a used phone, however, at least for me, whenever I see the words “certified refurbished”, I expect standards to be a bit higher than the average used phone when preparing for resale.
To be fair, it may not be Magic Mobile Partner’s fault - it’s entirely possible they rely on a third-party to refurbish their phones. But in the end, clearly quality and pride of work in the refurbishment process was either lost or never done at all, hence my rating.
One final note for the developers / modders out there, your experience may vary but I believe these are probably all previous Verizon units based on what I could find regarding my unit’s build number. It came with 7.1 so if I had kept it I could have unlocked the bootloader.
I sent that one back and decided to try again. The second Pixel I received liked to randomly reboot itself. During the initial Android setup it rebooted 3 times in the middle of menus, making me start over. After I got Android set up it rebooted at least 10 more times that day. I'd just be using it normally, not updating or installing or anything, and suddenly the screen would freeze and the whole thing would reboot.
I've purchased Amazon Certified Refurbs before and never had these issues. Don't buy this phone until they add some actual Quality Control to the process.
update: dropping from 4 to 2 to 1 star. Amazon sent out another pixel xl and less than a 2 weeks of use the phone is experiencing the same problem. Google won't do anything to help and Amazons solution is to replace a faulty phone with another faulty phone. I'll be returning the replacement and looking elsewhere
The bad - speakers and charging stopped working after 15 months.
No support from google b/c it is a refurb.
No support from Amazon b/c it was purchased too long ago.
I understand it, that is what you get when you try to save money buying a refurb, but it's a bummer - the phone was still basically perfect and it just died a slow death while I tried to perform electronic CPR on it over the last few days of its life.
How long is reasonable to expect an undamaged phone to work? For me it's longer than 15 months....

I found this listing of Pixel XL for CA$ 139 when browsing for budget secondary phone that has Android 10 running. I wasn't even thinking Pixel phones as they tend to be costly and didn't expect to find one for cheap. I was surprised when I found this listing. I know it is the first generation pixel but still thought CA$139 is a very reasonable price. But at the same-time it made me wonder, what is the catch? Could it be in a very bad condition or locked to a network and so on. Still the price was so tempting, I decided to take a chance. I ordered a black model from the seller "renouvelé". I received it in two days of ordering.
Surprise! The device came in a pristine condition (in the original pixel box), not a single scratch or a dent. Battery was completely discharged. So, I let it charge to 100% and started setting it up. The firmware was on Android 8.0. I updated and brought it up to Android 10 (Dec 2019 Update).
It works fine. I like how the device feels (Premium & New), especially for what I paid! Battery is mostly fine but if I have a negative to list, battery performance is the only one. It holds charge for a day of light/moderate use. Heavy users might have to charge twice a day. For my use, it is more than adequate. I use it as a secondary device, mostly for streaming music with data only SIM.
