Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Lorenz, who won a Nobel Prize in 1973 and helped create modern ethology (the science of animal behavior), is the focus of this picture-book biography. During his boyhood, he practically turned his house into a zoo—complete with insects, birds, monkeys, and even a crocodile. He was especially taken by the geese he saw migrating back and forth overhead, and as a scientist, he made them the center of his research. But it is his personal relationship with the geese that gets the most attention here, showing how he cultivated parental ties with hatchlings (one special goose named Martina even slept in the Lorenzes’ bedroom) and learned how to communicate in honk. Softly hued gouache, ink, and colored-pencil drawings reinforce Lorenz’s special bond with geese, depicting the moon-faced man in calming, pastoral scenes with a ever-present trail of adoring goslings in his wake. Although geese may not seem like the cuddliest of creatures, this is a nice choice to introduce the concept of interspecies connections, and it shows how a love of animals can become a lifelong passion. Grades K-2. --Ian Chipman

"These pictures tell the story as clearly as the simple text, whose language and frequent repetition make this scientific biography easily accessible to beginning readers."--Kirkus

Format: Hardcover
This biography about the little known, famous scientist Konrad Lorenz, the Goose Man. As a child his father wanted him to become a medical doctor. He did so but was not happy ans ended up following his dream, studying birds and their behavior. This paid off for him and he won the Noble Peace prize for his work in behavioral science in 1973. Most young readers may not be familiar with Konrad Lorenz but this book can change that! It may even inspire them to follow their dreams and make their own discoveries!
