The product that started it all. Original Gorilla Glue built a name for itself with its incredible, industrial holding power and versatility. The water activated polyurethane formula expands into materials to form an incredibly strong bond to virtually anything. Gorilla Glue is a 100% waterproof glue, safe for indoor and outdoor use and strong enough to stand up to the elements. Gorilla Glue’s your solution for almost any project or repair. Sand it, paint it, stain it. Simply stated, it’s the Toughest Glue on Planet Earth. Directions: 1.Prepare and Dampen the Surfaces: All surfaces must be clean, dust free and tight fitting. For shiny surfaces, such as metals, glass and some plastics, roughen up the material to give the glue something to bite into. Lightly dampen one surface with water. We recommend using a damp cloth or spraying with water. Do not saturate the surface. For dense hardwoods, lightly dampen both surfaces prior to gluing. 2. Evenly Apply Gorilla Glue Onto the Dry Surface. Carefully apply onto the dry surface. Do not over apply. We recommend wearing gloves or spreading the glue with a disposable brush. 3. Clamp the Two Surfaces Together Tightly. Make sure the clamping pressure is distributed evenly across the surface. Or, if you don’t have a clamp, use heavy objects or Gorilla Tape to achieve the appropriate clamping pressure. Clamp objects for 1–2 hours. For best results, allow 24 hours to cure. 4. Clean up: If you need to remove any uncured “squeeze out” or wet glue, we recommend wiping with a dry cloth or using a standard paint thinner. Once the glue is dry, it is best removed mechanically: Try sanding, chiseling, scraping or picking. 5. Storage Tips: After each use, wipe the bottle’s lid and nozzle clean with a dry cloth. While still squeezing, tightly replace the cap and then store in a cool, dry place. You should expect a year shelf life. This is THE glue to use for things like bonding wood to concrete or leather to leather, etc. I believe that it is the most useful glue for the most applications on the planet but it REALLY has to be used with great thoughtfulness! I highly recommend it for most applications!
The downside: It foams up as it sets, expands and turns light yellow and bubbly, so it's not really for use where it will be seen. It cures by absorbing moisture from the air so it may take a long time to set in very dry areas. And no matter how tightly you cap it, it will eventually harden in the bottle, wasting all you haven't used. I don't use it often so I end up throwing away 95% of the gorilla glue I buy because of this.
I have used it so far to glue Neodymium magnets to plywood, plywood to plywood, cotton cloth to plywood as well as small steel plates to plywood.
Basically it works on everything I needed it for.
Bonds various materials
As for why I have given it 4 stars well ...
Smells terrible (Not a big issue at all)
Doesnt get removed easily with acetone (Still not that much of a big deal)
Takes time to bond (at least 30 min to get 2 pieces of wood to stick while 15 seconds with an cyano acrylate aka super glue)
Gets enlarged when drying up (a little droplet can end up being a huge blob of dried glue)
Ineffective and glue hardens in bottle despite following instructions.
There are two very basic problems with this product, at least with my several different uses (i.e., different materials, wood, plastic, cloth, metal, etc.): (1) It just does not hold up. That is, it does not last long and is not very strong. (BTW I follow the instructions *exactly*.) (2) It very easily dries up in the bottle, even if you follow their instructions to try to get all the air out of it (which, by the way, seems impossible.) I suppose this product *might* be useful if you were going to use it all up within a couple of weeks, but beyond that, it just does not do as advertised.
I hate writing a negative review, especially when obviously there are others who have had a much better experience. Frankly, I cannot explain the difference in experience.
I would not buy this again, and wish I could return it and get a refund, but I'm past Amazon.com's cut-off. Alas.
I also do not have an alternative to recommend, but another to stay away from is Sticky Ass Glue SAG4OZ Waterproof. Same problems, similar product to Gorilla Glue.
If anyone out there can recommend something that REALLY works, I'd love to hear it.
REVISION, 1/17/2017: Changed from 1 star to 3 stars (for customer service). After getting the response from the Gorilla Glue company, I followed their suggestion and called their 800 number. The woman I spoke to was very pleasant and very helpful, and said she would send me some more Gorilla Glue, this time in smaller containers than the 4 oz. bottle which, if you don't use it often, is more likely to dry out. [RECOMMENDATION: Buy the smaller bottle(s) unless you plan to use the whole bottle in about a year.] ALSO NOTE: They don't state on the bottle that the shelf life of GG is only 2 years, there is no expiration date on the bottle, and the date of manufacture is cryptic; see attached screen shot indicating "13", meaning a 2013 manufacture date, a black-font number printed vertically to the left of the gorilla on the front indicates the date of manufacture). Had the bottle stated something like "This product is expected to last no more than two years.", along with an expiration date, I would have just lived with the problems I experienced. The customer service rep told me that she would pass my suggestions on to management; let's hope they listen.
