Martyn Lloyd-Jones says that our condition cannot be understood apart from the third chapter of Genesis. All was perfect in the garden until Adam and Eve rebelled. They didn't trust God. They wanted something more. Instead, they found misery, and they were cast out of Eden . Since then man has been trying to regain entrance into paradise. But there is only one way, and God has provided it.

In the Gospel in Genesis: From Fig Leaves to Faith, Dr. Lloyd-Jones stresses two main points. First, we know nothing about God or our own condition without God's word. "The Bible, far from being remote from life, is the only book that really does deal with life as it is." And second, believing and obeying God leads to peace and happiness, but sin leads to misery.

Chapters one through six are taken from the account of Adam and Eve's fall in the third chapter of Genesis. The last three chapters deal with Noah and the flood, the tower of Babel , and Abraham. Lloyd-Jones sees these as literal, historical accounts, and in each of them he sees a picture of man's lost condition and need for Christ.

These nine sermons are full of substance, yet simple to understand. Dr. Lloyd-Jones was a clear and logical communicator. This book is more evangelistic than many of the Doctor's works; every sermon has a clear gospel message. It would make the perfect gift for an unbelieving friend.

If you are looking for an in-depth, verse-by-verse commentary on Genesis, this is not it. But if you want a book that makes you think, convicts you, and points you to Christ, you won't be disappointed.

Format: Paperback
This modestly sized book, together with its price is entirely out of proportion to its enormous value. Nine chapters, (six on the Fall, and one each on the Flood, the tower of Babel and the call of Abraham); fill 134 pages of text. These were originally evangelistic sermons preached on Sunday evenings in Westminster Chapel, London in October-November 1955.

The fact that these are evangelistic sermons may lead some to think that already committed Christians won't benefit from them. This is not so. Dr Lloyd-Jones' evangelistic preaching is as full of edifying material for Christians; as it is full of evangelistic material for non-Christians. This is truly "theology on fire".

Another interesting feature is that the Christian message of salvation is presented on a colossal canvas; yet at the same time is amazingly finely focussed and personal. For example, speaking of the futility of life lived entirely on the human level, we are shown in no uncertain terms that "the human race is not allowed to build a civilization without God, and you are not allowed to build your life without God". The chapter entitled "Where Art Thou" is also particularly penetrating in its pursuit of the unbeliever; yet no one could fail to understand in the end, that in the miracle of the Gospel, the Judge is also the Saviour.

Further, although Dr Lloyd-Jones never shrinks from declaring the Bible's teachings that are most offensive to fallen people, he is able to do so in a way that leaves his readers in no doubt of his love and concern for their souls. The Bible's dire warnings of final judgement and eternal punishment are made crystal clear, yet the reader is invariably addressed as "my dear friend", or "beloved friend" in the last sections of each chapter.

The Gospel In Genesis by Martyn Lloyd-Jones

Some excerpts:

The psychologist starts with you and ends with you.
Philosophy strives for utopia -- man trying to get back into paradise.
Religion is not escapism. Everything else is escapism.
The bible tells us that the world is not accidental. History has a beginning.
There is a world besides this one, a world of spirits. God created angels who are not physical and have remarkable powers. God uses angels as servants.
There is evil in this world headed up by a person called Satan. We are victims of evil powers greater than ourselves.
Coveting, jealousy, conceit, envy and pride go back 6,000 years. There has been no advance.
Death is not the end, we go on for all eternity. Jesus came to pardon, not to cast out.
The bible is the history of God's dealing with men and women.
There is no more up-to-date book than the Bible. This book has spoken to generation after generation.
Misery results when man ceased to listen to God.
Atheist display their doubts, hatred and ingratitude toward God. They use their own reason and substitute it for divine revelation.
We all desire happiness, peace and joy but somehow this has been taken from us. We are restless, ill at ease and difficult to live with.
We cannot believe, finally, that we were just made to die. We have a sense of destiny.
Your conscience will follow you throughout eternity. Only the Lord can solve man's problems.
Whether we like it or not, this is God's world. You pass through this world once and once only.
There is perpetual conflict between the seed of the serpent and the seed of the woman.
