I chose Gospel Treason for my neighborhood Bible study . After meeting for 3 years it can be challenging to find a book that will push us to grow in our walk with Christ...WOW!!!! Did this ever challenge us? Gospel Treason truly gets at the heart issues behind why we continually do what we do. I highly recommend doing this book to tackle together with a friend or spouse whom you know inside and out and knows you equally well... If you Approach this book with humility and a sincere desire to take a real look at what's keeping you for walking more deeply with the Lord, this book could change your life!!!

Idolatry is serious in the eyes of the Lord, because in idolatry we abandon the gospel as our first love and begin to treasure and cling to something else as our reason for living. In his helpful book Gospel Treason Betraying the Gospel With Hidden Idols Pastor Brad Bigney writes to tell his own story of struggle with idolatry and how he came to a deeper understanding of the Gospel. During a particular season in his life he and his wife started to see a biblical counselor. He states that during this time "things began to change radically. Not that he introduced us to the gospel--we had both been Christians from a young age. I was the pastor of a local church; we still read our Bibles and prayed; neither of us had knowingly abandoned the faith--but we had replaced our Savior with idols, and these became the driving force in our hearts. We had fallen into the trap that God warned his people about so many years ago when he said in Jer. 2:13, "for my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water."

Gospel Treason is organized around three parts. The first part of the book explores the question of "So what's the problem?" by examining how idolatry starts with the Gospel drift, wrecks havoc in your relationships and changes your identity. Part two follows up part one with focusing in on the solution to idolatry. Here the author encourages us to examine ourselves in light of the Bible's teaching about idolatry and turn from idolatry to Jesus Christ. The final chapter asks, "What would an idol-free life look life?" Here the author makes five points: First that when we repent of idolatry you'll start to really get free. Second, you'll have a revival of gratitude for the Gospel.

The book is REAL, brings you to the real issues and real solutions. You don't have to take a pill to fix your attitude. When you dive into this book, it speaks TRUTH in no other way that I have read. It made me want more of the instruction and WORD. When we all struggle with LIFE, I found that this book had answers I could go by and reference. I thought idols were in the old testament, They are in our hearts.....

This book is a thorough review of the temptations, dangers, and consequences of idolatry in the heart. Although the book surprisingly did not give an account of the origins of the word “idolatry” or how Old Testament idolatry relates to how we talk about idolatry today, it nonetheless has a lot of helpful things to say about how the human heart constantly elevates things or people above God and looks for satisfaction in them.

I found most helpful the stories of people who had been caught up with subtle idols which “flew below the radar” for some time, and were only retrospectively diagnosed as idolatry. For example, the author recounted his own idol of respect from his parishioners, while his wife battled disappointment over her unsatisfied idolatry of the perfect home. It was eye-opening to hear how their respective idols clashed to the detriment of their marriage. Only after they saw their idols as such were they able to plot a course for recovery.

As the author demonstrated, one often doesn’t detect his or her idols until they go unsatisfied. But the stories mentioned above showed me that conflict is an opportunity to examine one’s idols and do some "idol-hunting" in one's life.

I've put off writing this review because I wanted to get my book out to reference it. I'm afraid if I take the time to do that, I won't ever write the review so I'm just going to wing it and get this off.

The bottom line is that I LOVE this book! I love the practicality. I love the wisdom and biblical truth. And I love all the examples. This is one of the most practical, enjoyable, and life-changing Christian books I've ever read by any author.

The more we loose our hold on our idols, the closer we grow to God, and this book will help you discover and let go of your idols.
