When he was only 21 years old, Pete Leibman landed his “dream job,” working in the front office of the NBA’s Washington Wizards. He went on to be their #1 salesperson for three straight seasons and was promoted to management in under two years.

In I Got My Dream Job and So Can You, Leibman shares his proven and simple system for career success. He shows readers how to:

• Think big and identify what they want from their career

• Network their way past corporate gatekeepers

• Impress highly influential people in any field

• Land interviews for “hidden” jobs

• Sell themselves on paper, online, and in person

• Get hired faster and with less effort than they thought possible

Career hopefuls will also find inspiring stories of other young professionals, creative strategies for leveraging social media in the job-search process, and the 5 secrets that will skyrocket their earning potential once they are hired. In short, all the information they need to land the job of their dreams—in any economy.

This is a practical, 256-page tutorial on how to get the job you've always wanted, and it is written to young professionals -- primarily those still in college. For young, motivated twenty-somethings without work experience, this is a great resource.

This book is in some sense a memoir of the job-search lessons Leibman learned through his own experiences. Like many in the self-help genre, this book includes dozens of anecdotes that can be summarized as, "I'm incredibly successful because of this technique, and you can be too." Leibman does a good job, however, of fitting his own personal anecdotes into larger points, and he does not simply beat the reader over the head with his successes.

Leibman ends his chapters with brief success stories from other people. The success stories are largely fluff pieces, devoid of substantive tips, but they reinforce each chapter's ideas (which are far more meaty and more helpful). Those stories were the only pages I found myself bypassing.

My largest takeaways from the book were these: Networking is essential, due in large part to how few people are hired based solely on their resume; an online presence is important to job seekers in all fields; and setting your career goals is a necessary foundation for the job search. For the first, Leibman's background in marketing and sales truly shines. He offers several dozen helpful tips to those who fear they'll never succeed at networking, and he provides step-by-step tips for how to network by building relationships rather than treating people as means to your end.

Leibman's youth shines in his sections on digital presence. He offers suggestions on building a winning LinkedIn profile as well as Tweeting with a purpose.

Engaging and geared towards the collage graduate job searcher, but it still has good info that can be used by anyone in any stage of their career that still hasn't got their dream job. While it has practical action points, I would say this book is only 20% action and 80% inspiring and trying to motivate you to follow the steps. If you've read any job search book you probably already know a good deal of whats in this book. The author does focus on your online presence a little more then other books I've read, such as using linked-in and making sure that there is no negative material showing up when someone searches for your name through Google or any other search engine.

If it's your first time reading this type of book or you just want some more motivation, it is as good as any other book out there. Otherwise do what you already know and don't wast more time reading and just start doing.

Disclosure: I was given a free digital copy of this book for review. I was not required to write a positive review, and all thoughts and opinions are mine unless otherwise indicated.

Pete Leibman created his own job description for his "dream job" and then sought it out and landed it - working in sports marketing at the age of 21 - for an NBA team. He was promoted to a management position in less than two years. In his book he explains why now is the best time ever to get your dream job.
Leibman offers examples of real-life success stories, and details a step-by-step proven process for defining and landing your own dream job. His well-designed and organized book explains not just the basics but also the detailed how-to on using social media to brand yourself as a high-value job seeker and connect with influential people who are in a position to hire you.
Why settle for a position with a job description that almost matches your skills and interests? Create your own job description! This book explains precisely how you can do that, and then offers guidance on identifying your target market and developing your individual marketing assets to actually pull it off.
"Lack of focus is a main reason why most people take months to get hired and why most people end up in jobs they don't like," writes Leibman. He then details the six key points that you must focus on to write your ideal job description: your ideal location, schedule, environment, function, employer size, and salary. Focus on your ideals and build your job description from that, and you've begun the process of landing your own dream job.
Leibman spells out specific job search strategies, including networking techniques both face-to-face and online, and he explains what networking is NOT and how to do it right. Do you know the differences between warm networking and cool networking? You need to know.
Leibman also explains how to not blow an interview - and he shares his tips for acing one.

I am at the opposite end of the age range this book targets. As such there is much in it that I have experienced first hand. Many of my successes were a result of actions detailed in this book. Most times, I knew this, but for some reason I did not develop those actions into a solid plan for on going success. And, certainly not to capture my "dream Job". The author not only does that, but presents it in a straight forward manner, reinforced with solid reasoning, 3rd party anecdotes and his own experiences.

There is much in the book for someone at my career stage to take away. As I transition from one long term profession to one which I feel will be a "dream", the steps in the book are very helpful. What is amazing is the obvious logic of the content. Again, perhaps that is my experience, but regardless I am learning much from it. If I could put this book in every college freshman's hands I would. Not only does the book provide specific instructions on how to land their "dream job" it will inspire many who might otherwise settle for the first job that came along.
