Lori Wilde walks the reader through what it takes to develop a high concept for your novel and she provides numerous methods that you can use to test your concept to ensure it passes the high concept scrutiny. She gives many examples from her own work and other recognized work. She gives the reader a multitude of tools to use for developing believable characters along with a strong and unique plot so when combined you get a high concept novel. You will learn how to say or write the concept "high concept" of your novel is a short sentence. Your high concept will have all the necessary ingredients to catch the attention of agents and editors. This little book is full of so many exercises, examples and bonus material that I am surprised that the author offers it at such a low price. I originally bought the Kindle version, but I refer back to this book so often that I also bought the print edition.
You can't go wrong with this book. It's jammed packed with a wealth of knowledge and information. While Wilde is known as a best selling romance author, her tips and tricks for developing a high concept work for all genres. I strongly recommend this powerful book to all novelist looking for a way to give your book that something extra that will grab an agents attention and keep your manuscript out of the slush pile. I also strongly recommend that you follow all of Wilde's instructions, suggestions and put the time in and do the exercises. You won't regret it. This book offers the absolute best understanding of High a Concept that I've come across and I've read just about every writing craft - how to book every offered for sale of given away. This is the only high concept book you will ever need.
Lori Wilde shows you how to conceptualize your characters, and deal with other tasks of conceptualization, to set the strongest possible foundation underneath your work. That lets you avoid getting some small-but-disastrous thing wrong from the get-go.
She also teaches how deeply one must carry one's vision out through details. If you are a pantser, a writer who doesn't like to plot before writing, I'd imagine Wilde's work will be your salvation. If you've only vaguely defined your protagonist, and then try to write her, them, it, or him? Disaster.
Plotters will be helped too. No matter how shiny and polished a plot, if the writer has not thought through the implications of concept, the work will not be well-characterized. Cardboard people may go through the motions.
So whether you are plotter or pantser, it's my opinion that you will be helped by "Got High Concept?" For $2.99, you get a LOT of bang for not many bucks.
Amazing value for a mere $4. Highly recommended for anyone seeking to pump up their novel.
