I needed to update an expensive piece of test equipment which still used a floppy drive for I/O. I decided to try the Gotek Floppy Emulator and it installed just like a regular floppy drive. The machine BIOS 'thinks' it's a floppy drive and writes to it like one.
This unit has the ability to make multiple partitions of 1.44MB each, but I only use one partition and it works fine for shuttling data into my report layouts in QuarkXpress.
Writing speeds are the same as a floppy, but of course offloading to a PC goes much faster than a floppy.
Aesthetically, it gives my test instrument an updated look, and even the color of the bezel blends in nicely with the front panel color scheme.

Works as it should and simple to install and use
Like the other reviews, mine did not come with software (though it is available online), but is not required, simply plug in the flash drive you plan to use with the emulator and hold down both buttons when you boot the computer (or device), and the floppy emulator will partition and format the flash drive for the equivalent of 1000 floppies, then reboot for normal operation
The software that (should have been) included only partitions and formats the equivalent of 100 floppies, and is known to be buggy, so you’re better off foregoing the software and just booting while holding both buttons until it begins counting up

Recently I've gotten very involved in retro computing. But in 2020, messing with tiny floppy disks is absolutely no fun. Bad sectors, dirty drives, it's just not a great experience.
Enter this thing.
It allows you to easily turn any old USB drive into 1000 floppy disks, and just push a button to swap between them. It works on any old PC or other devices that use floppy disks for storage (synths, etc).
Some notes about the default firmware that's on the device:
* The software to use the device is... interesting and a bit annoying.
* It's Windows only.
* It will only work with DOS and devices that support DOS.
With that said, it's trivial to flash a replacement firmware onto this device that turns it into an absolute POWERHOUSE (FlashFloppy, Google it). It just requires VERY minor soldering skills (my toddler could probably do it) and a USB-A to A cable like this: https://www.amazon.com/Rankie-Cable-Type-1-Pack-Feet/dp/B01KRO8D20/
With the replacement firmware you get:
* WAY easier to manage from basically anywhere, Mac, Linux, Windows, etc.
* Able to use it with other old devices like Amigas.
* Can easily replace the simple LCD with a full-featured OLED screen, again with MINOR soldering skills.
In all, a massive value for the money even if you just keep the stock firmware.

No documentation, but it's on line. Worked with a SWF A-T1201 embroidery machine.
Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2019Verified Purchase
I was able to get this to work on my 1999 SWF A-T 1201 embroidery machine. If you don't know about these, search for the product online and there are plenty of pdfs of the manual which is lacking, but several you tube videos are out there and forums discussing them for various products. I had to put the jumper across JA and rotated it 180 so that it could be screwed to the floppy plate. When you boot it, have a FAT formatted 2gb or less flash drive plugged in, hold both buttons on the converter down when turning the machine on. The drive will start setting up the folders. If the machine won't boot, let the drive finish formatting the usb flash drive (by holding both buttons when the power is turned on). Once it's done switch the power off and back on and let it boot normally. Once it was booted, I had the 1201 format the file folder selected (000). Once it was formatted my desktop was able to save files to it. File transfers much faster than with floppy and way more folders. I was able to load designs from it and will test it more over the next couple of months. But so far it works and you don't have to wait 2-3 months for the SUE version to arrive from China.

The only low cost drop in replacement for physical floppy drives. This is an actual Gotek model, but the software is not included. You need this to format your USB drive into blocks for multiple floppies. Check out the Philscomputerlab review for details. Works reliably though. Also custom firmware is available, but requires extra equipment to flash it.
The build quality could be better. The LED readout wasn't even hotsnotted in place. Just loose. So don't push on it. Support and documentation are hard to come by.

With no color in the description and that photo, I assumed this was white.
This is very much a gray drive, not even off-white. In retrospect I could see someone saying that the photo isn't white, but it's nowhere near as dark as the product which is very obviously gray.
This will stick out like a sore thumb in my white case so I'm giving a bad review for a bad description and photo causing me a return.
Based on my black one it should function great if you actually need a gray one.

I can't read or write Chinese. Their emulator site is understandable for the most part but the Help in the software and FAQ on the site is difficult to comprehend. They don't make it easy. After just tossing the instructions and experimenting and finding a couple of review video's - I got it to working. The software is not intuitive and after you copy a file to the USB stick, you must do a right-click on the folder (floppy) and perform a Save or the file is not written to the USB stick and you get no warning or error message if you don't perform the save.
It works as they say - "USB to Floppy Emulator" but you may need a martini or two to actually believe that. I don't know if anyone else's products are any better. Inexpensive product, free software - you get what you pay for.
