Prisoners from all over the empire are imprisoned in a large magical sphere where they have to work in the mines for the king. You are thrown into the sphere to give a letter to the high mages, this letter may be the turning point on the war against the Orcs.
The world is constantly changing, throughout the game sudden events will change the world and entire relationships between several groups. If a monster finds a better weapon it will use it.In the game you will pass a lot of different riddles that will take you to places where you can find stronger weapons or you can improve your equipment. graphics: there kinda like tomb raider 2 graphics, really boxy... but i would have looked over all that, if the story wasn't soo boring in the first chapter!!! but i guess after that it was kinda cool.
music: there's barely any music! and the music that is there isn't cool... it's dull!
story: it is so boring.... the main quest is so pain stakingly slow that i had to use cheats to freakin beat the game!!! i couldn't take the boringness!!! but after a few chapters in, i kinda started to like the story... if you get past the first chapter... which takes like 12 hours!!!!... the story gets rather interesting.
replay value: it's kinda ok.... i mean... i only played it 1 time so i wouldn't know... but i didn't have any trouble with it throughout the whole game...
gameplay: oh man, this is the icing on the dodo cake, it's TERRIBLE!!! to even pick up an item you have to push 3 buttons and to talk to someone... you have to push shift and hold down the direction arrow of the character you want to talk to and then press space!!! and the worst of all... i know you can change the controls... but when you do... the game goes nuts...and up is down!!! even if you try to change one control!!! the whole game i had to leave it on the default controls... when your fighting anything... you have to be 1 freakin inch away from them before you can even do damage!!!... so when your attacking something your basically giving them the pleasure of killing you! X-( i know you can use bows... but to shoot one freakin arrow you have to push 3 buttons! and thats only if you figure out how the heck to get the dam thing equiped!!! and the thing about spells, you can only cast them one time, with scrolls!!! though you can get scroll runes that allow you unlimited spell casting for that perticular spell, but there EXTREMELY hard to find! and you can't buy them anywhere!!!!!!!!
if you want to play an awesome RPG.... that has a good story, great graphics, and really easy gameplay... don't get this... i recommend getting either the witcher, titan quest, spellforce, or even two worlds!!!... anything is better than this!!!
P.S. if you still don't believe me... i think if you want to buy it... you should know that it works on vista.... but not on 64bit versions... but i'm tellin ya.....your making a mistake... ={ ....don't get it.... get something consideribly better!!! but if you insist on getting it, i recommend that you check out a demo version, you can download them for free, and most of them let you go through the first 2 chapters. just enough time to prove to you that it sucks!!!
My System:
CPU:
. Intel Core2 Quad (Q9550)
Memory:
. 4GB DDR2 SDRAM
Video card:
. Nvidia GTX 295 (Dual GPU)
Audio:
. Realtek - SPDIF (Sony/Panasonic Digital InterFace) out to Onkyo HT-S5300 Home Theater System (7.1, 1200 Watt) receiver
Video Driver:
. Nvidia Driver 192.21
Tried patching it to 1.08K and a more recent unofficial 1.0 patch (4/20/2010) which turned out to be little more than just a repackaged 1.08K.
Video glitches prevented me from playing the game.
The ground disappears sometimes, you can see through the ground and see water streams and vertical structures like wooden posts. Rendering stalls frequently when you turn to certain angles. Change in camera angle causes video stall and display previous and current frame at once. Graphics renders junk periodically while turning. Graphic effects also caused problem, like killing the bugs (at the beginning of the game) bring up blues sparkle effect and then the video rendering stalls, severely.
Tried some tweaks and got it only moderately running, but seems like it needs a overhaul of the graphics engine to play on 64-bit Windows with dual GPU (Nvidia GTX 295, tried single GPU and SLI rendering modes).
It looks like a compatibility problem, but I've never seen it running properly so I can't say for sure. If you plan on getting this games you might want to use an older computer system with older video and older drivers. It's not designed for 64-bit Windows and crashes frequently.
Rendering stalls can be reduced somewhat by lowering the visible distance to 20% (range: 20%-300%)
It supports various resolutions even 1920x1080 32-bit maybe every higher.
Tweaks:
To change to 1920x1080 32-bit colour, create a shortcut and in properties add:
-zRes:1920,1080,32
Example: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Piranha-Bytes\Gothic\system\gothic.exe" -zRes:1920,1080,32
If you want start the game in a window on the Desktop add to the line:
-zWindow
Example: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Piranha-Bytes\Gothic\system\gothic.exe" -zRes:1600,900,32 -zWindow
Decrease visible range to 20 (Menu).
If you want to try running it on 64-bit Windows, you need to copy the game to the \Program Files directory from \Program Files (x86) directory or it won't be able to process the gothic.ini file, which just shows some of the compatibility problem with this game with Windows (64-bit). Only 64-bit apps are suppose to be in \Programs Files, 32-bit apps are installed in \Program Files (x86) directory.
Edit: Tried Gothic II and facing similar problems. It looks like there is some improvement, but it's apparent it uses the same engine as Gothic I and has the same problems, rendering stalls or the program crashes. Maybe they could make the code open source and have someone look at it. Recompiling it for DirectX 9.0 might help.
