This book is a compendium of techniques, best practices, and the reasoning behind them. But it is so much more than that; it is a springboard for your own ideas and inspiration to build. It does not read like a novel, nor is it a step-by-step how-to manual, but as a reference to which you can consult year after year, it stands above other books. It details what makes the WEST System work and why. Whether your next project is stitch-n-glue, strip plank, or cold molded, this book offers multiple examples and techniques. I had a 1st edition for years that eventually got water-logged, then moldy so I bought the latest edition. No regrets.

I bought two copies for my boat-building sons, to support their knowledge of the use of fibreglass and epoxy, and then a third for my own understanding of what the boys were talking about. No regrets. The authors are pioneers in the topic, write from personal experience with both failures and triumphs explained. There are a number of editions of this book, all good but the later the better, as materials change and improve, and the longevity of the various applications is now beginning to be observable. An excellent book for anyone interested in boat building, with all sorts of practical suggestions that will save time, frustration and money, or so my sons tell me, and they should know.

An Essential Classic for any Boatbuilder Using Laminations

This book can be kind of hard to find. I ended up with a used copy, but there is no substitute. These guys literally "wrote the book" on wood and epoxy construction, and this is it.

The detail is astonishing. Want to see tables showing fatigue rates of various material? Considering build a wooden gas tank? Trying to figure out how to mount steel hardware in wood, and you don't want you bolts to pull? Ever thought of building a wing mast made of wood? Really, the detail is amazing. Did I say detail? (Yeah. Three times.)

There are very, very few aspects that are dated. Mainly, paint and plastics have continued to advance. But the techniques described here are mature forms. If you are into laminated wood construction, you need this book. I have not found anything quite like it.

Over the years, even though just an amateur, I've read several very good books on boat construction. Gougeon Brother's on Boat Construction is an excellent update and places the activity firmly in the modern era of scarcity of large timber sizes and a narrowing of available species.
Methods are described clearly and supported by clear illustrations. In addition the reasoning for a sequence of activities is clearly explained often with supporting test results. Usually chapters start with the big picture, a description of where the process fits in the larger scheme of boat construction, which adds clarity to one's understanding and can save frustration, time and money.

I guess you can really say "they wrote the book on the subject", and this is the book. Modern boat construction and repair is moving toward using marine epoxy instead of the cheaper but inferior polyesters. This book tells all about working with the new materials. It doesn't make good casual reading, kind of "more than I wanted to know", but if you really want the information this is the standard reference book. You will find yourself referring back to it time and again as you prepare to tackle your project, this book has it all- what to expect the materials to be able to do, how to select and work with them, how to fix things, how to avoid problems, plus a comprehensive list of resources. There are other modern boat building books out there, but if you don't have this one as well, then your library is incomplete.
