I love the concept of Pie Town and imagining all the wonderful choices to try! It's π Day every day (or March 14/3-14) Did you know there are always a few pie recipes at the end of the book? And the ones I've made have been delicious!
In this Pumpkin/Fall/Halloween themed book there is a Fall Festival complete with a pie baking contest, pie racing, largest pumpkin contest (with hefty prize money $$$), and murder by pie. Yup, the Baker Street Bakers and associates are back on the case of not just one, but two murders and a host of pranks and near misses. Their posse has grown and now includes Val's half brother's mother who is surprisingly helpful!
The story races full speed ahead (pun intended Charlene) with so many mishaps, near misses, and unexpected aside information. The characters are lively, quick thinking, and often unintentionally funny. This is a book that has you chuckling then holding your breath as you make discoveries along with Val. It's a spectacular book for pie loving mystery readers, as well as anyone who loves a quirky cast and a good mystery. Sadly it appears to be the end of the Pie Town/Baker Street Bakers series. One can always hope the author will change her mind and give us more pies and fun in the future!

Pie Town is a veritable boomtown these days and Val can’t believe her good fortune. With the annual pumpkin festival just around the corner, Val is hoping for a windfall and a load of great publicity for Pie Town. Though she’s putting in more hours than ever before, Val is happy with her life and simply can’t imagine it any other way.

As always, Charlene is up to no good and she simply can’t wait for the crowds to crash the pumpkin festival. With Val in tow, Charlene trips off into the pre-dawn hours to see the giant pumpkins that will be judged once the festival actually begins. Val is blown away by the tremendous size of the gourds and thoroughly disappointed by the dead body under one of the entrants. Yeah, death by giant pumpkin shouldn’t be a thing, but then, Val and Charlene have a habit of finding the weird wherever they go.

Lickety split, Val and Charlene are forbidden by the police chief from “nosing around” the investigation and Gordon – the only actual detective on the force – is removed from the investigation. Oh, and Val’s stepmother has come to town because things couldn’t possibly get anymore weird. Val’s stepmother is gung-ho to become a part of Val’s life and that means getting to know her friends and poking around in her business. In short order, Val is up to her neck in batsh*t crazy old ladies, including a 100-year-old witch who is seemingly out to get Val and curse her life. Because why not?

Over the course of her investigation, Val gets run off the road, shot at by a pumpkin cannon, and followed relentlessly by an unknown interested party. Charlene gets a drone, Val’s stepmother evidently travels strapped and ready for action, and Gordon is stress eating. What’s more, Val is putting in more hours than ever before and showing up at Pie Town even when the shop is closed. There’s nothing about any of those things that isn’t unnerving, and Val’s got to figure out how to navigate everything and everyone in addition to finding a killer.

The Bottom Line: Yet again, Val spends a good portion of this book (YAY!) evaluating and reevaluating her life and her life choices. The hours she works are becoming problematic for her relationship with Gordon and Gordon’s life, even beyond being a detective is becoming more complicated. To be sure, the presence of Val’s stepmother is a doozy of a plot twist, and Charlene is stellar, as ever. Of course, I like Val and her antics, but I am finding that the minor characters in this series are far more interesting and entertaining. There’s such a wonderful vibe among the minor characters that really help bring the whole series to life. If everything and everyone continues to evolve as I believe they will, this series is only going to get strong the longer is continues.

Wonderful Fall Cozy Mystery

Gourd to Death by Kristen Weiss is the 5th book in the Pie Town Mystery series. Although it can be read as a standalone (each mystery is self-contained) I recommend reading all the books in order as there is a lot of character development throughout the series. This book is a perfect fall cozy mystery. It contains all the things I love about fall such as pumpkin patches, corn mazes, fall festivals with baking and so much more. Val, the owner of Pie Town, and her pie crust maker, Charlene are the main characters in this book. They make quite the sleuthing duo, with Charlene being the instigator to trouble in most cases. This time Val has been asked to be a judge in the pie making contest at the annual pumpkin festival where she must remain neutral, but that is overshadowed when Charlene stumble on a dead body under one of the huge pumpkins. Who killed the local optometrist? Can Charlene and Val figure it out before anyone else ends up dead?

This one has Gordon, Val's boyfriend and detective removed from the case so he actually encourages a bit of the investigating. I laughed quite a few times while reading this one. Yes, there is a murder, but Charlene has a knack of adding humour to any situation, not necessarily on purpose. there is a ton of humor peppered throughout the pages (mainly from Charlene). I like that the crime occurs very soon in the story, so there is a lot of time to figure out what happened. The story is well paced and developed with a wonderful group of characters, many of which are a bit quirky, which I love. If you love pumpkin as much as I do, you will enjoy trying the recipe for pumpkin bread at the end of this book. I did a read listen with this one and it worked well, enabling me to read this one in a day. Narrator, Renée Chambliss has a very pleasant voice which fits this book well. Her voices add to the humor of the rather funny Charlene and the exasperation of Val. She is easy to listen to with good expression and tone which add enjoyment to this book. I was gifted a copy of this audiobook upon request. The rating and opinions shared are my own.
