I've long been a huge fan of Quest bars - they completely nail it on the macros, which makes them great for either cutting fat or building muscle. So many other protein bars are geared only towards bulking, and really aren't ideal for cutting due to excessive calories and too many carbs. I've got nothing against carbs, but when my calories are limited and I need to get essential amounts of protein and fat, then carbs are the macro that get reduced. Quest kills it in this regard - usually only 4-6g of fat, 2-4g of carbs and about 20g of protein, for around 160-200 calories. Awesomesauce.

So awesome that I've wondered why no other company has decided to copy Quest and make similar bars. So when I discovered Ansi protein bars at the store today, I knew that I had to try them - finally, another company has produced a bar with similar macro ratios and calories to Quest bars!

I excitedly ripped into my bar tonight. When it comes to texture/consistency, there are two types of protein bars on the market - the imitation candy bars and the taffy-like bars. Like Quest bars, these Ansi bars are of that taffy variety. The Ansi bars, however, are much softer and have a slightly more "unnatural" feel to them. It also feels like foam. Kinda strange. But whatever - with these macros, I can overlook a weird texture...as long as it tastes good.

The taste is OK. It's not offensive and there are no weird off-tastes (like in so many other bars), but it's also not particularly tasty either. A bit bland. After eating half of it, I decided to toss the other half in the microwave for about 15 seconds. This softened it considerably (duh!), which kind of nullified the weird texture thing. The taste also improved somewhat. But still not great.

I honestly love these bars. With that being said, can you find a better tasting one? Sure! However, I challenge you to find a better tasting bar WITHOUT sucralose. Over the last 15+ years, the food industry has forced sucralose down our throats and with sucralose being 600 times sweeter than sugar, we're used to things being sweet, therefore, taste better.

I've reached the point in my diet where I am more concerned with nutrient value over taste because let's face it, most whole foods are bland. I want protein, taste is secondary in priority. Good thing is, this bar does have sweetner, a natural sweetner known as stevia. Plus it has a touch of sweetness with sugar as well. Let's face it, sugar in moderation is not bad and this one has moderate levels.

Stevia is from a plant, sucralose (splenda) is chemically produced.

Sucralose: it's gotten to the point where the American Dietetics Association hasn't taken a stance on sucralose because more and more tests are finding just how unsafe this sweetner is (I have a few friends that work in the Office of the Surgeon General as Dietititans). They haven't taken a stance because the FDA still lists it as an approved general food sweetner, but the ADA is not endorsing it.

Anyways, I avoid sucralose. You'll find most of the quest bars have sucralose, hence the better taste. It's up to you, do you want the nutrition with or without the artificial sweetner.

I love quest bars and was wondering why nobody copied quest. I thought I found some. While nutrition is about the same as quest bars as well as texture, the taste is not the same. The taste of those bars is not what I expected. I do not taste any cheesecake flavor. More like mocha chocolate - not quite sure about the taste. I like that with save and subscribe those bars are cheaper than quest and may order them every once in a while, but I know I will buy quest bars in between since the Quest bars taste a lot better

One of the biggest items for me is that I deal with High Blood Pressure. For that when I saw these bars I was thrilled to see how low they were able to get the sodium content down to. In my case, I tried the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough which has 40mg of sodium and ANCI states that all their bars are below 90mg. Compared to the Quest bars which start at 250mg and go up from there.

Now flavor isn't the best but most of the protein bars out there, I've tried a bunch, don't taste all that great or close to the flavor that the wrapper states. These are basically a taffy bar with a little bit of chocolate chip cookie dough flavor added to it. One thing that please me was I did not seem to have any nasty after taste as I've had with some of the bars out there.

I recommend this bar to everyone that has HBP and even those without it.

I'm guessing gourmet cheesecake is imply a brand name, because there's no cheesecake flavor or texture to these bars. they do have distinct chocolate chips, but the bar itself doesn't do much to remind me of cookie dough. If I didn't have other protein bars to choose from, I'd buy this again, but I do. It's okay is a perfect rating for this bar; it's not horrible, it's not great - it' just ok.

I LOVE these bars! My favorite protein bar hands down! I can't get enough of these since trying them at Mr. Olympia in Sept, 2013.
