Top customer reviews
For other cooking, I have had good success with spinach, Brussels sprouts, potatoes, eggs, and chicken, and very impressive results with collard greens. I cooked half a large bag of collards for 20 minutes, seasoned with onions, salt, and pepper - no oil - and the other half I gave 40 minutes, seasoned with garam masala, carrots, and thin-sliced lemon - again, no oil. Both were truly excellent, mild and juicy - showing that users can time and season their cooking to their own taste. Seasonings and flavors can be added without fuss, as they pretty much mix themselves. It’s a very undemanding way of cooking.
But it’s not for rice! A rice bowl is included, and the directions say (a) to follow the instructions on your rice package, and (b) to steam long grain white rice for 40 minutes. But the package instructions say 20 minutes, by which time the rice is not cooked, and going to 40 minutes gives a kind of dissolving super-sticky rice pudding, perfectly edible, but far inferior to what a saucepan would give in half the time on an ordinary stove. You could work out the time and amount of water needed, but what's the point? I have set the rice bowl aside.
My old, more expensive steamer had metal stages separated by clear plastic walls with a metal lid. This unit is all plastic and feels light as a feather, but it seems stable enough for safety and its base grips the work surface reassuringly. The food baskets nest for storage. Plastic has many advantages, including 360 degree visibility of the water level in the tank. The material is BPA free.
My old unit had unreliable controls, which finally gave up altogether. I’m sorry to say that this one also has ill-fitting buttons and a hard-to-read display. User complaints about poor longevity may trace to a weakness in that area.
Beyond this I can’t deny that cleanup with plastic baskets is a bit more laborious than with metal shelves. But at this price (and presuming reasonable reliability) it’s hard not to like and recommend the Gourmia Steam Tower.
