The descriptions of the governesses love life are not at all typical of the behaviour of women in the 1930s and how the author manages to fit in encounters with the rich and famous can be jaw dropping. For example, bumping into a very affable Wallis Simpson at the top of a Scottish hill. The latter in full make up and heels!
Some of the timeframes shift a bit too. The love interest at the palace, who is described as a hansom young man, would in reality have been about 50 at the time the novel is set.
Despite the nit picking that I did over the history, I never abandoned the book. It kept me intrigued and interested throughout. Maybe even the fact that I had to keep verifying (or not) information I was not sure of, kept me interested.
I didnt find the governess a very nice person. Her feelings about her position fluctuated and she lost sight of her original intentions. The fact that she was abandoned by the Royal Family in the end was an obvious consequence of her actions. I would love to know the real reason why she betrayed their trust!
The framework of the story was there, one which we have all read before, but this a well written 'possibility' of her life.
It is an easy read, with the dramatic points well made, but you are left wondering if it is all true.
None the less, I recommend it, but remember - it is a novel!
