Government Bullies: How Everyday Americans Are Being Harassed, Abused, and Imprisoned by the Feds Hardcover – September 12, 2012
Purchase options and add-ons
And who is being held accountable? Government regulation and red tape run amok in Washington, and honest, tax-paying citizens are the victims of an administration's misuse and abuse of power. Now, Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky, takes an in-depth look at the legislation that is trampling the rights of ordinary citizens, strangling their ability to conduct private, everyday activities without egregious government interference. He highlights outrageous searches, seizures and arrests, and points to thousands of regulations that have been added to the books since Obama took office. Most importantly, he charts a direction out of this mess, and toward renewed freedom for all Americans.
These stories are of everyday Americans badgered and harassed by their own government -- -the very institution that is supposed to serve us all. This gross breach of our constitution is as frightening as it is real, and Goverment Bullies is a call to action against it.

"An exciting and needed call to change for all Americans"
--- Sarah Palin
"Senator Paul has given us a blueprint for limited government that would make Jefferson estatic...the Senator speaks in words we understand with conviction we all admire and an understanding of the issues that is breathtaking."―Judge Andrew P. Napolitano, Senior Judicial Analyst, Fox News Channel

Many of the outrages that Rand talks about are known to folks like me. I did learn of a few new ones and of course there are hundreds more out there no doubt.
That we live in this supposedly free country that is supposed to be ruled by laws, voted on by our representatives is becoming more of a joke every day. Every time I think of one of these Jack Booted thugs coming into that Amish farm with "Weapons drawn" I get sick. And I wonder just where they can find these kind of sick people that will work for those agencies. Then I remember that all thuggish governments have had citizens that just sign up for that kind of work. Hitler had no problem filling his ranks of SS with enthusiastic creatons like these FDA and EPA jerks. How these clowns sleep at night is beyond me.
But we all know that this is part and parcel of our Government these days. The folks we send to Washington could give a flip about us poor working folks. Their real job is to buy votes and get re-elected. They just don't have time to fool with writing silly laws. So they just abrogate their responsibility to one of these alphabet agencies and go on with their real jobs, buying votes.
One thing that would really help put an end to these things would be for Americans to get familiar with our Real Jury system and know that they can make a difference "One outrage at a time" simply by saying NOT GULITY.
I won't write a treaties here but understanding that the jury, and particularly the JUROR has a responsibility for not just judging the facts but also to judge the law. Now forget what the judge will tell you about the jury only being able to judge the facts and that HE, LORD ALMIGHTY will tell you what the law is. That judge is lying to you. Ever since the Trial of William Pen (1670) in England and Peter Zenger (1735) in New York, it has been recognized as a most basic RIGHT of the jury or juror to put aside bad law. "The Pages of history shine on the instances of the Jury's exercise of its prerogative to disregard instructions of the judge.." U.S. vs Dougherty, 1972. "The law itself is on trial quite as much as the cause which is to be decided." Harlan F Stone, Chief Justice US Supreme Court, 1941. And I could quote copiously in the same vein. But I hope you get the point.
If you are as outraged as I am over these terrible injustices, start doing some investigation. I found a web site for the "Fully Informed Jury" and learned a whole lot. You might too.
People. We CAN change this. But we need to educate ourselves. The elected representatives are NOT going to do anything. They have no time for this law writing nonsense. They have grand standing and vote buying to do which is much more important to them.
God Bless. JW
Sometimes a government agency (many times the unelected officials) forgets that they are there to serve the people and instead feel like they are the ones in charge. The book is full of examples where honest, hardworking citizens have had their rights heinously violated without so much as a second thought. Some of the examples may be extreme but the point is: these types of things are happening.
I also appreciated that it wasn't just a 280-page rant, there is some good additional material, good source material (websites and the like), and some suggestions on how we can help stop this abuse. I think awareness and general indignation is a great way to start.
The book is captivating but it's not going to win any style awards. It did feel sometimes like it was also a means for Rand to be able to tell people what he has been doing, which can be a good thing. I think when a lone person is fighting the tide and is especially against mainstream media's opinions, they tend to just ignore him and not cover him at all (witness the shameful way the Republican party ignored his father, Ron Paul at all the debates and even the convention). A highly recommended book, I'm going to lend this to everyone I know who will read it.

Senator Paul argues well that the answer isn't no regulation, just less. He introduces you to countless Americans who have been imprisoned and fined exorbitant amounts of money for minor infractions. People who might have gotten tangled up in some red tape, but certainly don't deserve to be treated like a murderers, rapists, and thieves.
As someone who used to teach English, I was disappointed to see so many typos in this book. Also, several times Senator Paul begins telling a story, stops it, and starts telling it over again a couple pages later. It isn't pervasive enough to take away from his message, but I would blame editors at Center Street for possibly rushing this book to the shelves rather hastily. Not enough sloppiness to reduce my rating, but certainly still prevalent.
This is a book well worth reading by anyone interested in politics. I fear that only some conservatives will fully appreciate it, but it's a book that any one with open eyes should be able to read and see why government can grow too big and interfere with personal freedom.
