This marvelous guide is an excellent source of information for New Yorkers and out of town tourists who are interested in joining 500,000 visitors to this island just off the southern tip of Manhattan. I am always amazed at how short the ferry ride is -- five minutes and 800 yards!
Fitzpatrick leads tours of the island and he captures the essence of over 100 different attractions on this small island. It is a great place for solo travelers and for families and for couples. Outstanding.
Governors Island is a National Park, and the National Park Service maintains an excellent website devoted to the attractions here. Go to nps.gov and search for Governors Island.
If you are really bitten by the power of this attraction, consider investing in Governors Island: The Jewel of New York Harbor by Ann Buttenwieser -- a wonderful illustrated history of the island.
Robert C. Ross
The pictures and clear and concise descriptions capture the old, proud buildings that dot the island such as the Post Theatre, Fort Jay Nurse's Quarters, and the Dutch House, making it just right for the hard-core history buff.
The information on ferry service, subways, restrooms and places to eat, and the low-down on the new park extension and events such as the Jazz Age Lawn Party make this guide perfect for the weekend adventurer.
I can't wait to get back to Governors Island this summer with Fitzpatrick's guide in tow and go exploring!
