Set in 1946 post-war London, the book is really about people coming together as they overcome the suffering they endured during the war. The surprise to the reader may be learning that the suffering did not end with the war. I found it fascinating to learn of the rationing and government mandated restrictions on things like bread and fabric.
This is the first book I have read by Meredith Kennon. The friends introduced to me in "The Gown Shop on Regent Street" are so inviting that I plan on reading some of their earlier adventures as well as keeping up with the ones still to come.
This is definitely a sweet story that skillfully avoids being saccharine.
While I loved the story of the gown shop, my favorite parts included Frank and Melany. I especially enjoyed Frank's sleuthing and Melany's articles.
This book works as a stand alone. It is the first book in the series that I've read and I understood everything that was going on. I'd love to go back and read the earlier stories that were occasionally referenced in the novel--as a matter of fact, I'm looking forward to reading more! Great work, Meredith Kennon!
Even though each character is introduced with a sentence of explanation, I never felt that I had a closeness to any of them I'm a fan of historical fiction but am so disappointed that I can't get comfortable enough to enjoy it!
old friends. I do hope that Meredith is planning more family sagas
After reading The Gown Shop on Regent Street, I decided to read another book by this author.
Imagine my surprise when I figured out The Gown Shop on Regent Street was #4 in The Greystone Manor series.
None of the reviewers mention and neither did the synopsis of this book.
Did no one think this wasn't an important piece of information?
Shame on all you have read Meredith Kennon before!
