Love is an unquantifiable emotion longed for, and in Cavalieri's life, secured in her deep bond with her now deceased husband, Ken Flynn. It informs everyone's thoughts, fears, desires, and inhalations of air. WITH is meant to be savored, pondered, revisited countless times so that by some sacred osmosis our cells absorb its wisdom, sass, and our mattresses are transformed into life rafts to cling to when grief's pain threatens to capsize us into oblivion. If you read no more than a handful of poetry collections this year, read WITH. You will arise each morning transfigured and strengthened in the wake of your brokenness. I would encourage you to really take in, "Safety," and to embrace your inner 12-year-old because at some time we will all need to summon that unthinkable courage and embrace that leap into whatever the new self holds on some distant shore.
With has overcome all the difficulties of the subjective in a delicately
mirrored record of her daily life. She gives us a finely pictured vision
of her struggles and the growth of her soul following the loss of her
husband of a lifetime.
The projections of her present life on her past experience give us the
true dimension of her long life with the love of her husband and the
continuity of her masterful creativity is plainly visible in With.
The brilliant lengthy poem With takes the reader on a
somewhat surrealistic journey with the skillful poet. In her
cool frankness she has revealed all, and shares all of the depth of
a master poet’s experience.
In this must read book of extraordinary poetry Grace Cavalieri speaks
the truth about an experience that is common to many other men and
women. She imparts gently but with the great wisdom she has
learned from her terrible loss the power of her greater strength.
