This 2-year old tech is unusable as a Bluetooth speaker for TV; only marginal as a "clock radio"
    2 Stars
This 2-year old tech is unusable as a Bluetooth speaker for TV; only marginal as a "clock radio"
Not an adequate Bluetooth speaker for TV:This first shortcoming is likely due to the fact that this is 2-year-old tech, using BT 4.1 with no aptX or other Low Latency capability. There are times when I want to wear headphones when watching TV in bed, and there are times when I prefer using a speaker. And at night, so as not to disturb others in the house even when using a speaker, I landed on using a smallish BT speaker bedside instead of the TV's full-on soundbar.Prior to buying the Mondo+, I'd been using a really old, rechargeable/portable Aukey Bluetooth speaker when I wanted a speaker, and a set of Sony Bluetooth headphones (with BT 4.2 and aptX-LL ability), each tied to an Avantree Oasis transmitter (also with BT 4.2 and aptX-LL ability) that's connected to my TV via optical cable. When it pairs to a BT device, the Avantree Oasis picks the highest quality/speed codec/protocol/something-something. Even so, I had a little bit of a latency problem with my older Aukey BT speaker: maybe a half second off (which is understandable, given that speaker's old age).I was hoping that replacing my old Proton clock radio set AND ditching the older BT speaker was going to simplify things and allow me some additional bedside table space. But nope. While I had a little latency with my really old Aukey speaker (and a little more than could be corrected with the Audio Sync feature on my TV, maybe a half second off, the Mondo+ is in a whole different league... bordering on 10 to 15 seconds behind the TV. Way outside the range of correction that my TV's audio sync allows (and probably outside the range of every TV out there... what TV is going to build in extra memory to allow for ridiculous delays like that?).The latency problem is really so bad that it's quite useless as an Bluetooth speaker for my use. Considering a complete return if I'm able to find an Internet Radio with up-to-date BT. But if I can't find one of those that I like, I guess my fall-back will be to keep the Mondo+ and (a) get an aptX-LL speaker, or (b) buy an Avantree or other brand of aptX-LL receiver and hook it into the AUX input (and pray Grace hasn't slowed that input down somehow)... either way, I'm back to more stuff on my bedside table. Darn. The interface makes this only marginal as an Internet radio; problems with their Portal:Second major category of shortcomings: The Grace Portal and the radio's Interface both fall far short of expectations. I group these together because the portal could make up for some of the interface shortcomings, and vice versa, but nope. I was expecting the portal would let me set up stations for Presets. Nope. And why would I think that? Well maybe because the marketing mentions of the portal read like the Grace portal makes setting up stations, podcasts, etc. easy, so you don't need to futz with the radio's interface directly. Except presets, apparently. So the some of the top-most user interface controls on this radio (the physical preset buttons sitting right there, on the outside, requiring nothing more than a push) are not addressable in the portal. Wow.And what little the portal does seem to do is pretty poorly executed. Because on top of the portal's general useless-ness, it's also slooo-oooww-ww and seems pretty buggy (2 years after this radio's introduction, mind you... plenty of time to "work things out"). My attempts to save a station were greeted with fairly cryptic popups saying that you can't save a station and can only save podcasts or streams or something to that effect (which made me immediately wonder why would you put "save" buttons in the station section/tab if you can't save stations, esp. when there's a separate podcast section/tab?).Then, despite the popups, stations I was told I couldn't save were actually saved as stations, apparently... so the popups were in error? But that's about the end of that potential positive: whatever you've saved in My Stuff is then literally *stuffed* several dial turn / dial click / dial scroll / dial clicks down in the My Stuff of the radio interface. Not in a preset button as I've said, but also nowhere near the top of the interface's Home screen entry. This is a multi-step process you'd probably not want to perform late at night or early in the morning, certainly, all the while asking yourself "now where did they stuff that?"As it is, I consider trying to use their portal and the paltry results a complete waste of my time. What would help immensely and actually make the portal useful: allowing users to actually customize the "home" screen (via the Portal), moving items not used (to a second screen?), and surfacing actual favorites (the number could be limited to 4 or 6 maybe?) to the top two rows of the Home screen. And, of course, give the portal the ability to set up and manage presets.Just to be clear: Given that the Mondo+ is now 2 years old, I actually don't expect any of these problems to be addressed, especially the BT latency. I would expect that Grace has moved on to the next great thing, and this is all a low priority for them. So when I say "they need to do X" in this review, I really don't expect any of that to happen. Which is now one of my new, more realistic, much lower expectations for the Mondo+.UPDATE (just 2 days later): And... yep. the buggy, slow portal is now completely down. Wow.
