Five years and a lot of drama have passed since the last record, "Pieces of the People We Love". First Luke quit, then Luke came back with new sense of purpose. Then Matt quit. Anyone hoping for another "Echoes" or "Pieces" might be disappointed at first. As "Pieces" only held hints of "Echoes", "In The Grace..." has reminders of the past, but really takes Luke Jenner's Rapture somewhere new.

This record is definitely a grower. The first time I heard it, there were a few stand-outs but i was disappointed. after a couple more listens i would get almost every song, at different moments, stuck in my head. I couldn't wait to get home to listen to it. It's a bit harder to review this record as no song is the same as the last. Every song sounds like it could be on a different album. There are very thoughtful lyrics and there are some incredible rhythms hidden here. Tracks like "Miss You" and "Come Back To Me" will remind you of a more "Pieces of the People We Love" Rapture. "Children" will make you think of early MGMT, and lead single, "How Deep Is Your Love?" will keep you coming back. There's a little bit of filler ("Roller Coaster") but all in all, this record will grow on you and stay in rotation for some time to come. Hopefully not another five years.

First of all, I hesitate to accept this album as a work by The Rapture. It's more of a solo work of Luke Jenner. Listening on my way to work, I had hoped to catch up on one of the most interesting, if not somewhat derivative, creative spirits to come around in awhile. I loved every other release, have had this sitting around awhile and finally had the opportunity to take a listen. I had a good laugh at each ill-advised tempo, lame repeated guitar lick, and ridiculous lyric. The first track was better delivered in a remix version. There was an end jam at the end of the album version, though, that was intriguing and I had high hopes. The rest of the tracks, however, are a collection of progessively more loose mess. It was like someone had eaten too much of the 80s and something really gross happened later in the bathroom and this popped out as well. Despite hopeful lyrics and ostensibly positive vibes, it is unconvincing. Musically, this pastiche of funk, rock, and loops doesn't work. Each track is more and more of a trainwreck. DFA does this band no favors by signing this band again. It's a shame that they really never found a good home for their creative spirit.

The Rapture's sound has undoubtedly grown since since their first album, Mirror, and they've proven that even from their 2006 release, they've learned to become more comfortable with their own style, and it shows with this fantastic album that has been played one too many times in my house.

It's a good album. I really liked "How Deep is Your Love," but the rest is ok. I haven't felt compelled to listen to it all again in one sitting.
