This Journey Is as Perennial as the Seasons
GraceLaced is about more than pretty florals and fanciful brushwork—it's about flourishing. This beautiful volume of seasonal devotions from artist and author Ruth Chou Simons encourages readers to become deeply rooted in God's faithful promises.

"Ruth Simons, mama to 6 boys, and one breathtaking artist (our walls sing with her gorgeous, edifying prints), is a mentor to me in many soul, life-giving ways. Have you seen Ruth's paintings? Four of these exquisite wonders hang on walls in our home...and one of those paintings, God used to lead us through the hardest season...and her Instagram feed? her blog? her book? can be like a gift of manna." --Ann Voskamp, author of One Thousand Gifts and The Broken Way
"How amazing is it, mamas, to have the beautiful, powerful, never-failing word of God all over our homes? I love that Ruth is using her incredible talent to help us follow God's commands so beautifully through her book, GraceLaced: Disovering Timeless Truths Through Seasons of the Heart." --Korie Robertson, of A&E's Duck Dynasty and author of Strong and Kind: Raising Kids of Character

This book is set up as a journey through seasons, as related to our walk with God. Starting with winter, and resting in who He is, and what God says about himself. Then, rehearsing in the spring; blooming in the truth that he says about us. Followed by summer, responding in faith to those truths and our calling. Finally, remembering God in fall. That time and time again he is faithful and will provide for us.
The book is set up as 32 short devotional offerings, ranging from Peace to Pruning. Part of me wishes there were 52 devotions, one for each week. Allowing one to meditate on each one for a week. Then delving into the additional scriptures provided for each reading for a couple days. However, the 8 readings for each of the four seasons does not diminish from usefulness of this book.
I approached it as a way to strengthen my daily time in the word. I added it to my daily prayer and scripture reading as a supplement. Meditating on the subject for the day and journaling the question or prayer provided at the end each reading helped to solidify the subject of the devotion. It spoke to me in ways I hadn’t known were needed in my life. I reread through parts of the bible (Joseph’s story, The Psalms, etc.) with a fresh perspective and could relate to them differently, and more deeply. This book was a place to rest and refresh at the end of a long, busy day, or truths to jumpstart my morning, and cling to as I lived out each day.
I will be coming back to this book through the seasons, and daily just to browse the beautiful paintings that fill these pages. Relatable, vulnerable, honest, and strongly rooted in scripture, it makes a fantastic gift or a short study with friends. Simple yet profound, its good for women in every stage of life. Even just setting this book out and open on your coffee table, or where you journal, is a beautiful reminder to be in the word and of God’s goodness.
A fantastic debut from Ruth! I look forward to what she and the team at Gracelaced have to offer next!
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
You could say this book has served as a diamond in the rough of my life. Recently everything I have knew came crashing down due to an unearthed situation; I had lost all hope. This book showed up on my doorstep as a nice surprise about two weeks after and has literally been the key resource in the process of restoring my broken heart. The reason I tell you this is because "self help" books were literally coming out of my wazoo but they honestly mean very little if a person doesn't know about God and His faithful promises to use as a foundation to stand by. I have found that actively reading my bible and going through these devotionals have been way more help than any self-help book I have purchased.
What's inside? The book is dissected into four sections -- or "seasons" of the heart as Ruth calls them -- with devotionals, full paged watercolor artwork, and bible verses to address four fundamentals in drawing closer to God. The first season is WINTER (which is where I currently am at) is about resting in who God is. SPRING season is about rehearsing the truth God says about you. SUMMER is responding in faith to those truths. FALL is to remember His provision to sustain you, time and time again. So, you could say this book is really for anyone because God knows we all struggle somehow but it's also for those who are currently in a gloomy season (like myself)! I love how Ruth uses seasons to describe the heart because it's a reminder that "this too shall pass" and soon we will be blooming again.
Finally, the book itself is gorgeous! With thick pages, artwork scattered throughout, and a beautiful cover; it makes the perfect gift. I actually keep the book opened with my favorite watercolor picture and leave it on my couch end table for guests to see. They can't help but thumb through it because, yeah, it's GORGEOUS. ;)
>>> I would like to mention that I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review -- BUT, after reading through the entire thing I purchased a copy for a friend who is struggling with infertility. I can't wait to give it to her!
Have you ever discovered an author that you feel just understands the thoughts you feel, but can’t always formulate into words? This woman has done this. Her book, Gracelaced walks through ‘seasons of the soul’ and records her recollections and experiences. She shares what she learned through her poetic language and beautiful art and photographs. The book is divided into short 2-3 page devotionals. Ideal for the busy women, but also refreshing when you just need to sit for a bit and be still. The cover art is beautiful and has a lovely texture. This would be ideal for a coffee table, bedside table or waiting room. Or as a gift to every person you know.
I preordered this book from Amazon as soon as it was available for preorder. I was also privileged enough to receive an advance copy to review prior to release. I received the book for no charge, but since I live overseas I paid for the express shipping(let’s just say I was thankful for a refund from something else, because, yikes!) But the book was worth the cost of shipping and I look forward to going back through slowly and gifting this book to many friends. Thank you Ruth for your beautiful words and beautiful art. I am happy to hold a bit of your heart in my hands. It is gorgeous!
