While the characters are interesting and diverse in this book, they are also extremely flawed. Zoey, while being a very good girl and career focused was raised basically by her brother and completely sheltered in overprotected from the realities of life. Talon raised her almost like a daughter after they lost their parents in a tragic housefire many years before.
While hesitant to do so, Talon & his wife allow Zoe to move to New York on her own and attend Julliard to advance her career in dance. At the beginning of the book she is starting her second year of classes and is already facing some challenges in making friends in dealing with teachers.
Very early on, we meet Hendrix. You can tell almost right away that he and Zoey we will meet again... The attraction in the connection between them is extremely noticeable. He's a bit of a bad boy and probably not the best friend or boyfriend that Zoey should have right now. He is a very bad influence on her. And he's not the only person she meets that becomes a bad influence on her. She begins to change the course of her life and her goals in New York. From there the story just gets deeper and more genuine to real life and the choices that you have to make in this stage of life. I think that Zoey learned a lot about herself in this book and it was an interesting journey to read and follow.
The only part that I didn't really like was the author's personal style. The book reads like a conversation, and while I don't mind curse words... it was strange to see them so often in parts of the book that aren't even dialogue. It's the mc's thoughts, and it's kind of a turn off for me. I just didn't really like it. It felt like one huge monologue.
While reading the book that comes before this one isn't absolutely necessary I would definitely suggest it just so that you have the history of Zoe's life and her brother Talon and his wife. Very interesting take on love.
