I've been doing the Gracie family's style of jiu jitsu for many years. Because of the intensity of the exercise, I was usually able to keep my weight in check in spite of my bad diet. While dealing with an injury that left me unable to do jiu jitsu for a while, my weight ballooned. That is when I decided to try the Gracie diet.

In this book, Rorion Gracie has done a nice job of explaining the full diet and its underlying philosophy. As a scientist, I find the lack of scientific evidence troublesome, but as someone who has trained with several members of the Gracie family over the years, I acknowledge that this diet has been "proven" in a different way. The Gracie family ages well. They manage to stay in amazing shape into their later years, and it is hard to attribute all of this to exercise alone.

I've been on the diet for four months. I have taken off more than 30 pounds. It has also had some remarkable side effects. First, I have struggled with stomach problems for my whole adult life, and they have largely disappeared since going on the Gracie diet. Second, the borderline high blood pressure I have had for many years has plummeted. I am also just starting to round the bend toward internalizing the Gracie lifestyle. The food commercials that used to make me salivate are now starting to turn my stomach. I get this oddly high feeling going through the grocery line with a cart full of fruits and vegetables while everyone else is buying processed crap food. I have internalized the feeling that my body is a place worth protecting and I don't want to poison it with the foods I've been eating my whole life.

This presents some unique challenges. I travel a lot for work and in some places it is impossible to stay on the diet.

Like simplicity and groupings. Results clearly speak for themselves. Recipes are very helpful.

Would like to understand more of the logic. Why can't you eat bread for 24 after baked? And why do i have to toast it? Why can't starches be combined? All the insights to these rules help me connect the dots so I can understand better.

Sure there was a good reason why these rules impact digestion but wish I knew why. Watching some of the videos have helped they are great! But some videos say "why do I peel carrot, because my Grandfather did." Ok but why did he? Love the book just want more insight.

I am a master's student looking to apply for chaplaincy in the military in 2 years. i have battled my weight my whole life and four people in my family have had gastric by-passes in the last 2 years. I am 25 and terrified of suffering the same fate!
The gracie diet book is not a crash diet plan; it is a path to healthy eating habits. As a side effect it helps with weight control! I have been on the diet just over two weeks, I have not starved and have been eating GOOD food. In that time I have lost nearly 20 pounds (ten of which was Christmas weight). I have tried several diets and was not able to stick with them because the foods included were so restrictive. No so with the Gracie diet! I feel healthier and am excited to be breaking the cycle of obesity that has plagued my family for generations. In addition to military chaplaincy, one of my greatest motivations is to teach my kids healthy eating habits. This book enables me to do that even though I did not grow up in a house that promoted healthy eating.

About the book:
It is a quick and easy read. It is based heavily on real life experiences. The practicality of the diet becomes more clear as the book goes on. It is someone what of an extreme change in eating habits for me but my motivation is high. The book helps you to evaluate your motivation and drive to succeed! If your not very motivated now, you will be when you're done reading. I loved how practical the advice was. A bit of honesty, it was kind of overpriced in my opinion, however it is hard to put a value on 80 years of research. If you consider the amount of time that has gone into testing the book not just the length it is a good value!

Don't mix your carbs and fruits and vegetables? Not going to hurt you, but seems like something my Eastern European grandmother would tell me after her 30 minute lecture on the death toll caused by drafty windows and failure to wear a scarf.

Any diet that says lay off the junk is a good one. But can't recommend other than a window into the Gracies process.

I used the meal plan and 15 recipes in this book for my mother while she was recovering from several surgeries and a mycobacterial lung infection. I don't know what it is about the diet, but her improvement after she started the diet was miraculous. Before starting the diet all she wanted to eat was Ensure, and she was always complaining about stomach cramps. I was hopeless and had no idea how to cook before I stumbled upon the Graciediet.com website and free youtube videos that show how to prepare some of the meals and recipes. The recipes are super simple, taste great, and mainly only require juicing and blending. It's like cooking with power tools. The only thing I was cautious about in using the diet was to make sure to use low fat cream cheese because there is a lot of cream cheese consumption in the meal plan.

I use the diet for myself as well and feel great. More importantly, if you have any older family members or friends, do yourself a favor by recommending this book to reduce the time, money, and heartache you'll have to spend in caring for them.
