Amazing sound quality

Grado is such a no-frills company that it's easy to notice several minor things that can be improved upon right after you open the box (By the way, the packaging is pretty nice by Grado standards.). For instance, at this price point, I would love to see detachable cords. The selection of ear tips is limited to three--small, medium and large silicon tips. A wider selection of tips, including some foam choices, would also be nice. Grado includes some replacement filters and rings, but not a word in the very short instruction sheet about how or when to change the filters. Sheesh! There is no tool to change the filters, or a tool to remove ear wax. No carrying case. It's about as basic as it gets.

But then, after securing a proper fit, which of course is crucially important for IEMs (I used Comply foam tips since none of the three included silicon tips fit me properly), and plugging them in to a quality music source, all negative thoughts vanished because the sound is incredible! I own Grado RS1i headphones, and they have somehow managed to replicate the amazing sound quality of those headphones into these little GR-10 IEMs. The sound is a little less airy and the soundstage isn't as wide (not really surprising since the RS1s are open-backed headphones) but in some ways there is more of a feeling of presence using the IEMs. I have no idea how they do it. But do it they do. These IEMs are expensive, but I think they are well worth it. Highly recommended.

I have several Grado headphones, I usually started out small by getting their entry level one then step up to see if I like it first.
I started out about 5,6 years ago, don't remember how I heard about Grado. Bought a SR 70 headphone, then sold it to a colleague (at a lost of 10 bucks) to fund the SR 325, liked it, then stepped straight up to GS1000 (1K) (bypassed several models in between).
I did the same with ear buds as they are much less conspicuous at work. Got the IgI for $90, liked it so I stepped straight up to GR10 (skipping the GR8) for $400. It was a lot, but you get the best. It is the whole experience of enjoying the music that is worth the money to me. I also heard these are made in Japan due to tiny component assembly.
I don't like company that spend a lot of money advertising because I think that money can be used to improve product quality. The reverse is also true when excellent product does not get advertised at all in some cases. There is much advertising from Grado and I think that hurts their products.
I can see myself easily use this earbud for at least 4,5 years or more, that comes to about twenty something cents a day. I am able to say that because I have had it for about 6 months and I have not had a ding on it as I took good care of it (got a box and handle with care, I guess the amount of care is proportional to how much one paid for it!)
I view it as an excellent set of speakers that is also extremely portable, mobility is what I'm looking for, I can take this excellent "speaker" anywhere. Nobody would know how expensive the earbud is unless you tell them. Highly recommended.

Update 1/18/15 - After using it for 2 months I can tell you that it did not disappoint. This is my best Grado purchase (others include SR 70, SR 325, GS 1000, igi) because I use it mostly outside of the house: at work, away from home (GS 1000 sounds better but one can only keep it in the house as it is leaky soundwise). Sometimes I sit in the store, drink coffee, do homework, listen to this earbud and I can tell you I feel like dancing with the music, and another awesome thing is that you don't bother nobody else, it's like having an orchestra playing to just yourself, feeling very exclusive! If you have thought about one of these, might as well shell out an extra 100 bucks to skip GR 8, and go straight to GR 10 (it should be $400 new, not more).

The look of $50.00 earbuds; put them in your ears and any thoughts of "I paid $400 for these?" disappear. Actually, pretty much everything around you disappears except the music. I have several IEM's from companies such as Shure, Westone and Etymotic that are growing quite lonely now. The Grado GR10's instantly became my "go to" IEM's. They are small, light weight, comfortable and sound truly amazing. The bass is solid, controlled without bloat; the midrange is very detailed and the high frequencies are non fatiguing. I'm not trying to convince anyone that the GR10's are the best IEM's on the market, but in my opinion, they easily outperform their price point.

Be sure to get a proper fit!

I received these about a week ago and started listening through them via an Audioengine D1 external DAC after some 15 hours of burn-in. Being used to a snug fit, I switched the standard tips for the larger ones immediately. I wasn't happy: the Grados sounded better than the buds that came with my smartphone, but I expected something more for such an expense. Quicker rock music easily crowded the higher frequencies, while the soundstage remained rather constricted.

Out of curiosity, I switched to the standard-size tips. What a difference that made. It was as if the phones opened up! The Grado's soundstage became immense for an in-ear, the crowded sound fading away in favour of smoothness. Three ear tip sizes are included with the phones: be sure to try all three for your best fit, as this transformed the Grados into a truly addictive pair of in-ears!

Detail and separation is outstanding without inducing hearing fatigue. The lower frequencies, while informative, are nowhere near as pumped as most consumer earbuds/in-ears, so if you're looking for bass oomph (as opposed to precision and transparency, where the Grados excel) you'll be better off with other products, many costing less than half as this one.
