By using tone-wood clad with metal alloy we’ve obliterated two of the most vexing issues in headphone design: ringing in the chamber, and transient distortion. This gives audio professionals the security of consistent response throughout the frequency range. Did we mention they look awesome? You could pay more for headphones, but you can’t afford anything less.
..the Grado PS1000 doesn't have few peers - it has none – at least none that I've ever heard in my home, other audiophile's homes, in audio salons, or in professional recording studios. - Enjoy the Music, Tom Lyle
This hybrid design has an inner sleeve of hand-crafted mahogany made by using the new series 'e' curing process. Its outer housing, machined from aluminum then chrome-plated, utilizes a special processing and casting method to increase the porosity of the alloy. This combination of wood and metal insures that the earphone chamber has no 'ringing' which might obscure detail or add coloration. The way the wood and metal housing moves air and reacts to sound vibrations is virtually unaffected by transient distortions. Grado has also designed the cable for the PS1000e; the twelve-conductor cable design uses UHPLC (Ultra-High Purity, Long Crystal) copper, improves control and stability of the total range of the frequency spectrum. The PS1000e also has a new 50mm driver and a newly re-configured voice coil and diaphragm design, resulting in unsurpassed speed and accuracy responses.
The cushion design creates the correct balance between the driver and housing to support the desired musicality. The cushion design also makes the PS1000e one of the most comfortable headphones in the world. Grado has taken all of our knowledge and over 60 years of experience in controlling resonances and eliminating distortions, and put them into our finest headphone ever, the PS1000e. Grado is unbelievably proud of this flagship product… listen and enjoy.

No, I haven't heard everything out there. But when comparing the Grado PS1000 (Non-e version) with the Sennheiser HD800, I had enough time in the store to make a few observations.
Both image very well. Both have a good-sized sound stage. Both are very detailed. However, the Sennheisers are far more comfortable. They localize instrument and vocal placement slightly better, and in a somewhat more three-dimensional space. I would also consider the HD800 more neutral than the PS1000.
Still with me? This is a review of the PS1000e, but my comparison between Sennheiser's former flagship and Grado's former flagship revealed the intent behind the products. Sennheiser has created a tool for scrutinizing a musical piece with a great deal of enjoyment, while Grado has created an instrument unto itself. Much like a room affects, to a great degree, the sound of speakers or instruments placed within, so are Grado headphones adept at presenting an organic portrayal of source material. These are for fun, and fun they are! I listen to a multitude of genres, and they never cease to please.
I found the PS1000e to have even greater detail and imaging than its predecessor -- that is, more of a sense that a voice's or instrument's sound is coming from a precise location. With a tad less bass than the PS1000, these headphones still extend to very low frequencies and present bass in a natural way. I could say that in a way, they get closer to the sound of the HD800, but they actually surpass it.
The only thing that gets in the way of pure audio bliss with these cans is their weight. Some will find the PS1000e heavy -- possibly intolerably so. I purchased a headband pad which could, with quite a bit of effort, wrap around the stock leather Grado headband. This did not help in my case. I was, however, able to trim a thick belt to create a custom comfort strap, much as you'd see with the MrSpeakers Mad Dogs or Alpha Primes. This completely solved the problem, but it's pretty ridiculous to have to modify the headphones just to make them wearable with any kind of comfort. This is the reason for the 4—star review.
I've also been quite familiar with the sound signatures of several other Grado headphones that I have owned, and to anyone worrying about the increased treble that Grados are known for, these have a much more detailed sound that could not be described as harsh, unless you're listening to very low quality files, and even in those cases, the poor source material seems to be handled more gracefully than lesser headphones.
I find these headphones a major improvement over the original non-e version PS1000, which had boomy bass and some screaming highs.
Even if you did not like the original PS1000, get these. They are so much more refined and musical it's a revelation. There are headphones that cost $3000+ (planars, dynamic, and stats), but these are the most natural. Fluid and detailed and full of impact simultaneously. They are not featherweights, but they are balanced nicely and I feel no pressure from the headband or clamping from the pads.
•1: THESE REQUIRE A GREAT AMPLIFIER FOR BEST EFFECT! I guarantee that these will sound nowhere as good if you're using no audiophile level headphone amplifier or a small/weak cheap device like a Fiio E6 or E5. The higher end Fiio amps can get a good push on the driver going, but I found that using my O2+ODAC started to make them really shine. With that in mind I took it to my next amplifier test and used my Schiit Magnus/Modi stack. Same quality as the O2. Not terrible at all but I knew that I could push these more and get that signature Grado soundscape, shimmer and warm bass. I ended up using my Audio Technica HA5000 and it got the drivers going to satisfaction. The HA5000 provided an impedance match and tons of power to really get the drivers moving. The more power (within reason) you can get to the drivers, the more detailed and warm/sparkly they will sound. Don't expect to just be able to plug these into your iPod and be touched by the hand of god.
•2: GARBAGE IN = GARBAGE OUT! Source material matters. My music source for my testing was 24bit/198k bitrate and depth. I also ran these with my J.A. Mitchell Gyro SE turntable going into my Technica HA5000 as a source. The highest quality your source sound is the better represented it will be in your cans. Even with the greatest DAC and amp in the universe an over compressed low bitrate MP3 will sound just like that. An over compressed low quality mp3.
•3: THESE ARE OPEN BACKED HEADPHONES! Open back headphones are meant to have less boomy and thumpy bass than closed back headphones. Open cans usually have a more tighter and warm bass that isn't exaggerated and boomy. It's more representative of the actual sound source. Open back cans ARE NOT sound isolating. It goes both ways. You can hear yourself snapping to the music and others around you can hear the music you're snapping to. They bleed sound out the back a lot. As to be expected with audiophile level open headphones. They're meant for listening to your hifi stereo/source at home. If you want thumping, floppy exaggerated bass for dance, techno, rap, rnb, electro/dub whatever either get a pair of high quality closed phones or if bass is the only thing you care about and you want to only have that at the expense of rich mids and shimmering highs pay $600+ for neck fashion accessory by Dr. Dre.
The styling of open back headphones might not be for everyone. I wouldn't recommend it for portable use or studio monitoring because of the lack of isolated sounds. But for sitting in your comfy chair, listening to records on the turntable, watching HD movies, or playing video games with great sound these hands down can not be beat.
I imagine the guy who went into hysterics and left a 1 star review was expecting some kind of booming exaggerated fake bass with no actual sound detail. These aren't Beats. They're Grados and they're meant to give you the truest playback of your favorite things in how it was meant to be heard. Just because the impedance is there doesn't mean it'll sound great on a weak amp, no amp or your dinky iPods 0.5v power.
I took down one star because while these are durable, they're fairly heavy and can fatigue your head/neck after several hours.
