Ever wondered what hardcore audiophiles are hearing, and that you might be missing? The Grado RS1e is the point of no return so be warned, cross this threshold and you’ll never enjoy mass-market headphones again. Once you’ve experienced this elegant audio masterpiece you’ll grasp the reference.
... They excel at giving your music real definition, and they have one of the silkiest presentations at the high end that I’ve heard in a set of on-ear headphones. I found they did real justice to almost any music I fed them, and they’re beautifully balanced at medium to full listening levels. Another win for Grado. - Woody Sherman
The new RS1e from Grado uses a different species of handcrafted mahogany from our previous models. The earpieces utilize an intricate curing process that optimizes the tonal quality while giving them a new look. The RS1e places a 50mm dynamic transducer and an 8 conductor cable design in an open-air configuration. The result is a smooth, controlled, and coherent sound with detailed dynamics. Frequency response ranges from 12-30 kHz and the drivers are matched to 0.05dB. Weighing 9oz, the headphones are an example of the wonders of Mother Nature with a gorgeous light mahogany look. The RS1e is a masterpiece in the Grado collection.

When it comes to treble, I have sensitive ears. Brightness to me is painful, and I'm happy to say that the RS1s have never hurt my ears. They're just so smooth. Also I can listen to them at ANY volume, even hushed levels, and once I've acclimated to the lower volume, they're just as engaging and interesting to hear as they are when played louder. This is a big deal. In a quiet room, at low volumes, I can listen for hours without any fatigue.
These are open-ear headphones, and believe it, they leak sound in a real way. If you're around people, they can hear exactly which song you're listening to. The opposite is true too — outside noise will make it into your headphones. I would never wear them on an airplane. But in the right environment, in a quiet den or living room, the sound is just so sweet and rich. They're warm, clear, and exciting.
I listened to quite a few other headphones before purchasing these. These included Grado RS2e, PS500e; Sennheiser HD 598, 600, 650, Momentum; Denon AH-D5000; Bowers and Wilkins P7; BeoPlay H6; AudioQuest NightHawk; Audeze EL-8. There were pros and cons of each however these were by far my favorite headphones. Since I use my headphones with a digital Yamaha Clavinova that is sampled from a 9' Yamaha grand piano I was mostly interested in a headphone that could accurately reproduce the usual Yamaha piano sound. These headphones perfectly reproduce the brightness of a Yamaha piano, much more than any other headphone I tested. I've been told that with some burn-in the brightness may subside a bit so I'll update this review as needed. The other highlight of this headphone is its ability to reproduce the articulation of every single note. Other headphones sounded muddy and the notes ran together too much. These headphones also excelled versus the others when listening to myriad other genres using a headphone amp. The included extension cable is a really nice benefit too!
There are two issues I have with this headphone. First, there's not a lot of bass. When playing classical music this isn't an issue but it becomes apparent with modern music (rock, hip hop, etc) much more. I've also been told that with some burn-in there will be more bass so I'll update in a few months. Second, and the biggest problem, is the ear cushions are rough! So rough I could only comfortably wear them for about 5 minutes. Thankfully, there are replacement cushions available on Amazon that are made of softer material. I opted for the over-ear G cushions since I'm not a huge fan of on-ear cushions. These G cushions make the speaker grill sit a bit farther away from the ear than the stock cushions which results in a bit less volume. When turning the volume up a bit I didn't notice any change in the sound quality compared to the stock cushions. Others say there is a change but I couldn't hear it.
Overall, these Grados are the best headphones I've ever listened to or owned. Get them, you won't be disappointed!
UPDATE 1/2/16 - After several months of burn-in I'm happy to report that there is a lot more bass now, much more than I expected there to be. In fact, there's more bass than my Denon AH-D5000s which are closed back. As I said before, this isn't that noticeable with classical music. But on a song like Sail by AWOLNATION the bass is incredible on my Grados and puts my Denons to shame. I also previously mentioned the brightness out of the box with these Grados which I believe has settled in now after several months of burn-in. They still reproduce that bright Yamaha Grand Piano sound but there was a bit of an edge before that has rounded out now.
I highly recommend these, even more so than I did before!
