Barley has a mild flavor when used alone but has the ability to absorb flavors of the ingredients mixed with it, giving body to dishes by retaining its shape during cooking. It can serve as a side dish alone, mixed with other grains or as an addition to salads. For a softer texture try adding 4 cups water to 1 cup barley. Hulled barley has only the outer husk removed, and is thus more nutritious than pearled barley, which has the husk, bran and germ removed. Barley has a rich, nutlike flavor and chewy consistency that makes it a hearty addition to soups and stews.

This is NOT hulled barley -- it is pearled barley

I ordered this online because I wanted hulled barley, but what I received is pearled barley -- the appearance, texture, taste, nutritional information, and cooking instructions are the same as pearled barley I can buy at Safeway for a lot cheaper price.

I do recommend true hulled barley as it retains more of the outer husk than pearled barley and is healthier (more fiber, lower glycemic index). But that is not what this product is. They should sell it as organic pearled barley.

This is an excellent product,it has really helped to bring my glucose under control. However, Amazon sells the 2# bag for $13.99 but I bought it at Wegmans for $5.99. It's sold bulk for $2.50 per pound at Wegmans.

I wanted to eat hulled Barley (not pearl barley) since a long time after everyone started talking about it's health benefits. Consider hulled barley is like brown rice and pearl barley is like white rice in terms of the nutrition/health benefits. Most of the barley brands found at the grocery stores are not good quality and are expensive- I think these fall under 'speciality', 'vegan', 'healthy' food category. I am very happy to have to found this organic barley brand on Amazon at such a great price. It cooks very quickly in the rice cooker and I used it a lot for making rissotto. The texture is great, not husky or rough. I love this product. It is healthy as well as tasty.

I am not a vegetarian, but frequently enjoy vegetarian food. The chew with this product is very satisfying. The flavor is great. There is small print on the package suggesting an overnight soak if you are preparing on the stove top. Heed. I ordered this to make some healthy main dish salads. The first one I wanted to try was a take on salsa. Barley, cherry tomatoes, avacada, cucumber, onion, and sliced almonds. I went with the salsa theme and used pumpkin seeds. Of course a meat could be added or cheese crumbles. This is a great product; Healthy, taste great and you can cook extra and chill for use later in the week.

Don't believe the description this is pearl barley for sure not hulled barley!! And its not even good pearl barley at that. Cooks up super soft and mushy, zero texture, basically just like flaked barley which I find completely gross. If you're looking for whole grain hulled barley this ain't it!
