Editorial Reviews

Review

`driving, fresh imagination ... this book shows ... how he kept faith with the ideals of his boyhood ... There are bracing thoughts here, too, on the chorus as the centre of musical life, on the revival of old music and on music as democratic art.' Paul Griffiths, BBC Music Magazine, March 2000

Malcolm Gillies has certainly done his homework in editing this great book on the select writings of one of the most eccentric and interesting of concert pianists/composers/editors/scholars of the 20th century. The select letters cover many subjects from music, ideas, compositions and musicians. Grainger includes much on his favorites including many fellow musicians from The Frankfurt Group of his early student days in Germany.
This excellent researched book is highly recommended for anyone who is interested in Grainger the artist and pianist. The bibliography is well researched and makes for interesting reading in its own area.
