Designed by Elof Granberg more than 35 years ago, the file-n-joint is an industry standard for accuracy and durability. This guide file allows your professional chain to right in your bar with precision. Will hold all file sizes for standard chain pitches and lowering depth gauges. Precision bar-mounted chain saw sharpener/file holder made of cast aluminum and zinc-plated steel. Use calibrated swivel guide markings to set and hold correct sharpening angle. Integrated features allow users to set file height and tooth length.

The only tip I will leave being I haven't seen it mentioned before is this. I have found that if you set the jig to where the file is oriented to sharpen at a 10 degree downward angle while sharpening the cutter to whatever angle it need be; the chain sharpened in this manner will tend to pull thru the cut more efficiently and reducing operator fatigue as a result. I've sharpened at 0 degrees, which is perpendicular in relation to the bar, for a long time, and my observation is that the 10 degree downward angle produces a slightly more functional and sharper edge.
I have tried several different chain saw sharpening devices over the years and this is far and away my favorite.
It sharpens the chain at the exact perfect angle when you set it up correctly. It also is useful for getting all of the cutters to the same length.
It is my opinion that due to the precision achievable on this device that my chains cut faster and longer, and that it is easier to use than any other equivalent device.
I also highly recommend staying away from any type of sharpener that uses a grinding stone. they will heat the cutter de-tempering the tip of the cutter causing it to wear in less than half the time, and the area behind the cutting edge will become harder, which will make it virtually impossible to sharpen the chain with a file.
Get a really good file and the Granberg Bar-Mount Chain Saw Sharpener, use it properly, and your saw will cut fast and cut for a long time.
Easy to assemble out of the package and it's really easy to use once your over the learning curve.
However, I do agree with some of the other reviews about the milling on the aluminum and how the durability could be an issue. Others have said they have broken the sliding rod and handle. I can see how that will happen if you are overly aggressive with filing. But, if you treat it correctly and don't torque on it while filing, I see no reason why this won't last a long, long time.
I sharpened 5 chains in a row and had no issues. I did grease the sliding rod to limit friction, which made the whole process smoother. I'll change my review if anything happens, but overall this is a good buy for someone who doesn't mind taking the time to sharpen their own chains. Be prepared to spend a little time fine tuning use though.
