This must rank as one of MJQ's John Lewis' finest recordings, but it's the saxophone of Bill Perkins that will captivate you. A great set that leaves me speechless. Aptly titled, this is a Grand Encounter of the highest order. If you love great music, this one is not to be missed.

One of the most remarkable jazz albums of the 20th Century -- six tunes, none played faster than a brisk walk, all of them containing almost a dictionary definition of the beauty of melodic improvisation.

The solos of Lewis, Perkins and Jim Hall are all gorgeous, with just enough humor tossed in (is Hall in "Love Me or Leave Me" making a sly reference to "Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree"?). Perkins' solo on "Two Degrees East, Three Degrees West" evokes Lester Young, while Lewis is brilliant throughout.

Chico Hamilton does more with his brushes than Donald Trump's barber could on his best day, and Percy Heath provides his customary wonderful foundation -- but listen to each note Heath plays complementing John Lewis as Lewis opens the melody of "I Can't Get Started." Oh, and Heath practically trading fours with the melody at the opening of "Two Degrees" -- whew!

Out of print? It's why the Internet exists. Unlike the fat man, Casper Gutman, who spent 17 years tracking the Maltese Falcon to Istanbul, you will find a copy of this more-than-valuable bird in less than seventeen milliseconds, courtesy of Amazon.
