The Grand Illusion: A Synthesis of Science and Spirituality book One Paperback – December 14, 2012

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 44 ratings

The Grand Illusion (TGI) synthesizes the paranormal with today's hard science, seeking to initiate a dramatic reempowering of humanity. You'll no longer consider yourself just a powerless little "meat computer" destined for total annihilation at life's biological end; that outmoded worldview is firmly buried by the material set out within.

Here, new and expansive vistas of possibility are laid bare; the forces and energies produced by our consciousness that act on the world around us are blown open for your understanding. Did you know that modern neuroscience considers the brain as a receiver of consciousness rather than the generator of it? Get ready for an introduction to the mysterious "fifth force" known to science-a virtually unshieldable "carrier wave" of consciousness that can travel at speeds far exceeding light.

With the knowledge that we are incredible and immortal spiritual beings temporarily inhabiting a dream-like, multidimensional, holographic reality, we can indeed begin to turn life on this planet-which, for many, is a virtual nightmare-into The Grand Illusion.

Are you ready to meet yourself?

"A masterpiece. If The Grand Illusion were merely paradigm-destroying, which it certainly is for rearguard scientific 'Funda-materialists,' it would be a satisfying read. Fortunately, for those of us dedicated to establishing a new civilization of consciousness, Brendan Murphy's fascinating, inspiring and seminal work also opens the door to a world of new creative possibilities. ... The Grand Illusion is mind-blowing."

At more than 500 pages, The Grand Illusion is a hefty tome that is jam packed with so much quality research and detailed information it could make your head swim - except it doesn't. Murphy masterfully weaves complex information with an easy readability- and sensibility- that makes TGI the rare non-fiction book that is actually hard to put down.

Our current "official" science denies the existence of such phenomenon as telepathy, telekinesis, clairvoyance, human energy fields and the like - labeling them with derogatory terms like "paranormal", "metaphysical" and less formally "woo woo". People are taught to regard these concepts with a sort of hostile and superior skepticism and dismissal. Respectable mainstream research institutions and peer reviewed journals refuse to even consider the subjects. The common belief is that none of them have been successfully investigated or demonstrated by the scientific method.

I myself had never understood why this attitude was so rigidly held until I came across a passage in a scholarly article that said that the translation of the word "chi" (subtle energy) into English is "spirit". The line in the sand between science and religion that was drawn hundreds of years ago is still in play here - subtle energy and anything having to do with it is simply verboten in our secular sciences because it is perceived as "spirit".

However, the fact of the matter is that thousands upon thousands of rigorously conducted scientific experiments have been conducted that DO show the validity of these phenomenon. And numerous brilliant minds have investigated and explained how and why things like telepathy, remote viewing and distance healing work. This evidence has been swept under the rug, repeatedly, until it has become a towering elephant of unarguable data. Murphy does a brilliant job of throwing back the rug, pulling out the evidence (the depth and breadth of his bibliography is mind-boggling), and explaining how and why it all hangs together.

The explanation, ultimately, is a relatively simple one -the existence of subtle energy, also known as aether/time-space/the zero-point field/the implicate order/torsion fields/the Higgs field (and many other names besides): the holographic connective medium of pure potential and geometric patterning that underlies and connects all of creation. This element has been removed from our cosmology, leaving us in a purely explicate order of separate, mechanical things where there is no approved scientific mechanism to explain the "paranormal".

Murphy shows us that ultimately, it's all normal. He erases the line in the sand between science and spirit with matter of fact clarity, arming those with open minds and disarming the skeptics, bringing us all closer to the resolution of the non- beneficial and illusory science/spirit duality that in many ways defines (and contributes to the sickness of) our culture.

This book is a must read for anyone desiring the scientific and historical foundation as well as a practical, thorough, logical understanding of all that is mysterious in our world, particularly the relationship between consciousness, energy, and existence. Brendan's incredibly thorough review of the literature as well as his ability to clearly articulate and integrate a wide range of esoteric and scientific concepts is like nothing I have ever seen or read before. He is brilliant to say the least. In general this is an amazing tome of information that transcends many different areas of study: physical hard sciences, metaphysics, consciousness; paranormal; energetic; and otherwise and I have made it part of my "Must Read" list for my students. I HIGHLY recommend this book for all scientists and practitioners in the hard sciences, social sciences (the healing professions in particular), and anyone who knows there is a way to connect our entire historical knowledge base to an integrated whole of all that is visible and invisible but feels overwhelmed in attempting to put the puzzle together. Brendan has done it for us.

First there was Michael Talbot, then there was Lynn McTaggart. The new generation has picked up the Mantle of educating the human race to its future possibilities and true nature. As a person who has read about 90% of the hundreds of references in this book, this is a magnificent compendium that can push the human race forward instead of each new generation having to reinvent the wheel.

This book is a magnificent read. Take your time, it took me three months to digest this material and refresh my memory of things I had studied earlier that tend to be forgotten in this age of flooding information. I definitely have scheduled a reread of this magnificent tome in the New Year.

This is the one book that I will gift to my millennial sons, with the message that if you want to understand my life, this book will be a major step.

I'm only part way through the book so I can't accurately give 5 stars yet. But, I really resonate with most of what I'm reading as it is exactly what I've intuitively researched, learned and felt for the last several years. His grasp of quantum physics, occult practices and other sometimes very cerebral subjects is astounding and he makes it about as easy to comprehend as anyone could. He brilliantly connects the widely flung dots of how our universe, even the very fabric of reality, is constructed and operates. A must read for any genuine truth seeker...especially one desiring to affect change here for the better.

I LOVE this book and can't wait for TGI2. My fascination with the connection between physics and spirituality has spanned the last 44 years and this is the most complete book I've read on the subject (and I've read many). The information is detailed, well researched, yet presented in a format that is understandable. Brendan also includes CURRENT research data missing in many other offerings. If you want to change your life for the better.... this book is a WONDERFUL place to start!

I am on a quest to find out the nature of reality. I have read many books that detail aspects of research into the nature of reality and from a limited perception try to establish a theory. This book blows all others away in that the author pulls together research from every field imaginable that in their own way all lead to the same conclusion. He writes about quantum physics, sacred geometry, clairvoyants, the physics of sound and light, shamanic knowledge, ancient Indian mythology and so much more and brings it all together to establish a true theory of everything. I have read books that the author draws information from, but none of these books alone can bring together the information that The Grand Illusion does. I am looking forward to book 2.

Truly amazing. This is the book that all of us with highly developed psychic abilities have been longing for. Brendan methodically deals with each aspect of the paranormal and validates them all with extensive references to scientific research through the ages right up to current knowledge on quantum physics and string theory. He sets out to take the “para” out of paranormal and succeeds.

A work of absolute genius and an essential reference book for anyone interested in the science of the (para)normal. This is a truly mind-stretching work. You will never look on this world through the same old eyes ever again. With the help of this book, we can break free of our false conceptions and liberate our souls.

This book should be gifted by all world Governments as a manual of life to all children born into this world to educate them as to what "life" on this “planet” really is about. Well, that won’t happen but we can dream. And we certainly do, for that is indeed our reality. Life is a another form of dream. Welcome to the illusion of life.

To paraphrase the words of the prescient 19th century French philosopher, scientist and priest, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin: “We are not physical beings having a spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings having a holographic experience.” Life is not what you think it is. This amazing book will truly awaken and enlighten you.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book I have ever bought

I am thrilled to have found this author. Now I know I can perhaps share my experiences with others who know what I am talking about. I have been aware that my experiences are rare and somewhat out of this world (which they are), but mainly beyond anything that is seen as "normal". Thanks to this book I have now fantastic feeling to know I am not (after all) alone. Up to now everybody I asked how to contact someone - who might be interested to learn about my experiences - I got no answer at all. Then in some other
spiritual/science books Brendan has been mentioned and here I am. I also hope that I will be able to get linked to him (others), perhaps be useful in some way. Thank you so much Brendan. I cannot wait to get the Book two.

I started reading this book with great expectations because of all the positive reviews it had received. I cannot tell you how disappointed I was! There is absolutely nothing new here. If you have studied this kind of subject you will have read it all before. I found the book impossible to read because it was so full of references to other people and their work, the whole thing simply did not 'flow' for me. I really did try to persevere because I had paid a lot for this book but by the time I got about a third of the way through I realised that it was not getting any better and I was not enjoying the style of writing. I picked through the rest of the book at random and each time I came across a quote or a reference. To be fair Brendan did say at the beginning of the book that he had spent years studying these metaphysical subjects etc., this book seems to be made up from the notes he made during his own personal study. What a total waste of money, I will put this book down the charity shop and hope that whoever buys it manages to enjoy it more than I did.
