Almost three decades after it was first released, “The Grand Duchy of Karameikos” remains a masterpiece of world building. Aaron Allston fleshed out what was a simple two or three pages buried in the back of a book in the Expert Dungeons and Dragons box set and the results are impressive. Allston provides detailed descriptions of towns, cities, the economy, landscapes, important players, religions, racial groups and climate. It’s an impressive start to the Gazetteer series that TSR launched and, even after all this time, offers an excellent locale for DMs and players. Highly recommended.

Did not come with separate map. My fault for not fully reading the item description. Product exactly as advertised. Very satisfied with service and product.

This module was produced in 1987, and although more than 25 years have passed this first gazetteer for the world of Mystara is still an excellent RPG product. The cover art by Clyde Caldwell (which produced so many unforgettable covers to TSR), the internal art by Stephen Fabian (very good line drawings) and the richness and consistency that Aaron Allston gives to the lands of Karameikos, trying to respect the immense material that was already published in the boxed sets and several adventure modules, makes this product an indispensable aid to any who want to adventure in the wild and mostly unexplored redion of the Grand Duchy of Karameikos.
The adventure possibilities are almost endless, as are the source of conflict including between the main ethnic groups, powerful families, external foes, religious differences and even a terrible internal nemesis – The Black eagle (a great foe). The main areas are very well detailed with information regarding history and possible plots, just like many rich NPC’s such as the ducal family, ministers, ambassadors, and some members of the main families (Torenescu, Vorloi and Radu) among clergy and other interesting characters like criminals, tavern owners, relevant locals for almost every location…all this with great plots in which you can include your heroes.
The considerations related to history (both the one your players know and a more detailed version for the GM), politics, society, climate, economy, belief and even dress for the various classes and social stations gives a believability to this region that was quite uncommon in many other products from the eighties. Just as a simple example, it explains why are there so much gold in Karameikos and why it hasn’t the same value as in our own world. I don’t remember in any other product until 1987 (and if there were any, it would be very few) that managed to worry about considerations like the amount of gold in circulation and its respective value!
It also includes a big colored map with hexagons to facilitate strategic movement. This supplement is not only a piece of Dungeons & Dragons and Mystaran history, but also a very worthy RPG product.

Here it is, the first, most respected, and most in-demand sourcebook in the GAZ series! The Grand Duchy of Karameikos is a land filled with adventure - the entire B series of modules is located here! The Duke is a vastly powerful man, but his reach exceeds his grasp, and the frontiers are wilderlands filled with monsters, lost valleys, ancient treasures and bold explorers. Come to Threshold in search of adventure, infiltrate the Black Eagle Barony, and behold the wonders of the great city of Specularum itself! A must-have companion for any Mystara campaign - the ideal starting grounds for any group of adventurers.

I was very pleased to acquire this again for my collection. I have many great memories using this in my Dungeons and Dragons game for several years.
