Editorial Reviews

Duke Ellington said, "Mary Lou Williams is perpetually contemporary. Her music retains, and maintains, a standard of quality that is timeless. She is like soul on soul." Her longevity as a top-flight jazz artist was extended because of her penchant for adapting to and influencing stylistic changes in the music. With Ronnie Boykins and legendary drummer Roy Haynes, this live concert from the mid 1970s shows the many facets of the great pianist / arranger / composer, Mary Lou Williams.

I thought the performance was great and am completely confused by the previous comment on this CD. I did not hear problems with tape speed and only a few very slight dropouts that you'll probably only notice if you're really listening for it. I first heard part of this recording on a jazz music channel on cable. The other review made me hold off but I decided what I heard was so good I had to take a chance. I did, and I was glad. The playing is quite a bit more aggressive than I would have expected, but in excellent taste and not over the top. I actually didn't have any recording of the ``first professor of jazz'' in a small ensemble before this. It's nice to get to hear this historical figure in this context important for a better understanding of who she is.

Do not buy this cd. Ms Williams' playing is excellent but the quality of this recording is so poor you'll want to run screaming from the room. The tape machine used for this performance must have been dragging. The whole performance particularly the piano sounds as though the tape motor overheated or something. The tape speed is uneven throughout the entire set. This performance is ruined by the uneven tape speed and it never should have been released on cd. As it stands this was a ripoff.
