It is not often that I give a book a 5 star rating. Perhaps 2 or 3 a year, 4 or 5 at most. I'm a tough scorer!
The thing I liked about Grand Slam was that it explored the BDSM world without being overwhelming and Lily managed to make it sexy and tasteful, and perhaps even something I might want to explore with the right partner - that right there is powerful writing. Of course, that's just a fancy of mine and not something that I will actually do, but reading this did make me entertain the thought.
The reason I loved this book is because I love tennis and it is one of my favorite games to watch either live or on TV. I don't actually watch any other sport. This book brought to life a very private side of a world class tennis player for me and it certainly changed the way I looked at the game when I watch Federer or Nadal play. :-) There's just all sorts of sexiness that I imagine now when I watch tennis.
I enjoyed the dynamics between Travis and Marie. His attraction to her, his dominance, and her submission. The whole sexual aspect of their relationship was so well done, and there were just lots of sexy times in the book.
On top of that, I enjoyed Lily's descriptions of the game, the psychology of a top tennis player and what goes into prepping for a game. I'm sure that real top tennis players perhaps don't prep quite the way Travis does, but then you never know ...
I highly recommend this book.
Grand Slam is a M/F BDSM novel written from the first person perspective of the two main characters, Marie Sherratt and Travis Connolly. Marie is a sports psychologist and Travis, a world class tennis player, is her patient, and while both characters are stereotypically beautiful, their personalities are intelligent and complex. I loved the psychology aspect as the therapy sessions allowed an insight into the characters that would have felt forced in any other interaction, but they were also used as a stepping stone to a more personal relationship rather than being the main focus of the story.
The dialogue, both internal and external, is natural, and the writing styles of each author fit together seamlessly to create an easy to read novel that pulled me into the story rather than leaving me watching from the outside.
And, of course, as an erotic novel, the sex has to be good. And it is. Lucy Felthouse and Lily Harlem pull out all the stops to create believable sex scenes, both from a visual perspective and an emotional one. Their attention to detail is fantastic, and the result is a novel that will leave you hot and bothered and desperate for more.
No book is perfect, but my only criticisms with this novel is that I personally don’t like first person narratives told by more than one character as it is easy to forget whose viewpoint you’re seeing. Saying that, it only took a few chapters before I got into the flow of it. I also thought the storyline could have been a bit tighter in a few places, but this wasn’t severe enough to pull me out of the storyline at any point.
My final thoughts are that I am happily surprised to have enjoyed a sports themed erotic story, that I will definitely read more by both of these authors, and that I will ……. this novel to all of my friends.
While I was given this novel for free to review, I will happily spend money on both of these authors from now on. Lucy Felthouse and Lily Harlem, keep up the great work.
