I'm not going to go over EFLC's content, since the game (or games, if you count both episodes as separate) consists of the same mission structures, funny writing, hilarious dialogue, and good old fashioned open world gameplay that has been the hallmark of the series since GTA3. Granted, the gameplay is starting to show its age and lack of creativity, so I hope that Rockstar does revamp the series a little bit in the next major iteration of the game. There is a very good game waiting to be played in EFLC. However... from a technical standpoint, this game is a disaster.
Personally, I have a midrange gaming PC (consisting of an Intel Core 2, 2GB RAM, 8800GT) and the game struggles to reach the optimum of 30 FPS needed for gameplay. Most of the time, it hovers in the low to mid 20's, which is still playable, but unoptimal nonetheless. Texture pop-ins are quite frequent as well. Furthermore, the game tends to stutter a lot on my computer during firefights, which makes them very frustrating to engage in. Also, I find the game's camera to be extremely sluggish (it sways side to side whenever you are sprinting) and unreponsive at times.
Hopefully, Rockstar will patch the game, but I am not holding my breath.
There is also multiplayer, accessible from your in-game cell phone, but I have noticed that very people are playing it, if any. Most of the games I join are virtual ghost towns, and it becomes difficult to find a game at night. Furthermore, there are no dedicated servers, as EFLC uses matchmaking provided by Games for Windows Live.
And finally, I would like to say a little something about the DRM. There are two types of DRM in this game: SecuROM, and Games for Windows Live. SecuROM is used for the physical DRM (i.e., you need the disk in the drive to launch the game) and GFWL validates the game via a product key to unlock achievements and multiplayer for the player. I don't find SecuROM to be much of a hassle (you can always use a no-DVD crack to bypass the disk check), but I do have a problem with GFWL, since you can only activate the game 15 times before you have to call Microsoft for more activations. I find this atrociously anti-consumer and a complete hassle for those of us who reformat often. That said, I don't seriously find the DRM used in the game to be a major problem as a whole, but the whole limited activations thing is a joke and simply inconviences the end user in the long run.
Overall, this game gets a 4/5 from me, minus one star for performance problems and DRM featuring limited activations.
Personally I like to play games with customizable characters rather than a predetermined one. I prefer to play as a girl when I can because playing as a guy is a bit strange but I can overlook it in this case. As with GTA 4, the world is beautiful and realistic, the cars take damage and are neat, its fun to run over things or shoot at things or whatever. I didn't feel the same emotional connection at the end as I did with GTA 4, but that's okey. It was a fun couple of games and if you liked GTA 4 (or any of the other GTA games), then I highly recommend it. Also, you don't need to have GTA 4 to play these. Its not an expansion, ELC can stand alone on its own.
Graphics. Enhanced in both versions, including a useful Night Shadows option
Lost and the Damned includes a gritty film filter that adds a fuzzines to the game, like a grindhouse or drive in movie film, its nice looking, but I prefer without
Ballad of Gay Tony seems to have higher res textures and character models
Sound. Not much diff. from GTAIV, but bigger and enhanced soundtrakcs are a plus
Gameplay
MUCH BETTER
The bikes handle really well in LATD, in fact I rarely drove cars at all. Minigames like gang wars and bike races, pool, cards and arm wrestling are fun too. The campaign is top notch, like Hell Ride meets Sons Of Anarchy.
BOGT is awsome as well, its adds in all the rediculous over the top missions that were the standard fare in GTA3, Vice City and San Andreas
Like, base jumping, attack helicopters, satchel charges, automatic shotguns, armored cars and more!
Must Buy
The graphics for TBOGT look to be better than those for TLATD, all the better now that I'm playing it in 3D.
The missions that have fellow computer controlled gangmembers along to "help" you out play like they were never tested before being released. Your supposed "allies" in these missions/tasks do little except run into your player or stand in front of him. They are much more of a hindrance than a help. I find it hard to believe that Rockstar released it as it is as it is such this part of the game is such a sorry exercise in programming, but then again you can be sure that there's a large group of highly paid managers there now that can think of nothing but stuffing money into their pockets. There are numerous other points in both games also where you're left scratching your head wondering if or why nobody ever tested the gameplay before releasing it. Likely not.
The overall story & missions for both pretty thin compared to the previous GTA releases. While moving around the nicely rendered city in 3D is fun there are so many poorly designed gameplay elements that this can't get about the one star level. The slow deterioration of the GTA game series with each new installment bodes poorly for what GTA5 will be.
