I've been hammock camping since the '90s and I own and like some excellent hammocks from ENO, Hennessy and Trek Light. The Grand Trunk is made just as well as any of these, both in fabric quality, sewing, design and sizing.
The fabric is soft, like synthetic silk.Thin yet stubbornly tough. I've never had a snag or a seam come loose.
On big advantage to Grand Trunk is it comes immediately useable 'as is' out of the box with included ropes and metal carabiners, unlike competitors who just ship the hammock itself without ropes or hardware.
If you get into enjoying 'hammocking' you may want to add on longer ropes to allow you to tie up to larger trees/further apart, and/or tree straps.
This is a great AND affordably priced choice for casually tossing into your day pack for a midday break on a long day hike, beach, a car camping weekend, a deployment, or a backyard. Packs down to about squishy-cantaloupe size in its own sewn-on attached drawstring sack.
I am 6'0 and 180 lbs and I'm totally comfortable stretching out in it. Room for a small dog to join me also. And wide enough to two people to sit back in comfortably as a 'chair' (hip to hip, of course).
For serious hammock camping info, Google 'hammock forum' for a nonprofit forum site with tons of great hammocking info and how-to's. Also lots of good user info on the Grand Trunk Goods website.
2014 Update: Since I first published this review, and after 4 years of enthusiastic use, my original hammock fabric split. I contacted Grand Trunk, and they IMMEDIATELY shipped me out a new replacement hammock, without charge, and without any fuss or drama. Extremely nice and efficient people to deal with. The kind of vanishing old fashioned customer service worthy of REI or LL Bean. I'm impressed.
ENO makes a great hammock also, and you can't go wrong with either. And you'd be hard pressed to tell them apart without the labels. But great customer service, great warranty and a lower MSRP has made GT my favorite of all my hammocks. Check out their Ultralight backpacking model, also.
Hope this has been helpful in your researching hammocks. Happy hanging, everybody.
