However, he is somewhat fair, when the chores are done, when the boy behaves, he allows the boy to have a free day with a 5pm curfew. After all, you can't teach someone to follow the rules without giving them room to break them.
The reason I'm giving it 4 stars is because of the following.
1. They gave the main character abs- really? This guy is almost a school shooter, those rarely have abs, they're usually bag of bones skinny or scary looking.
2. He and a girl fall in love and she actually gets him a burner phone. That's so unrealistic! This guy is a whackjob, a weirdo, what are the chances he would meet a girl that understands him 90 minutes away from LA?
Honestly, I hate love stories, why can't horror writers just write horror? Why do they have to insert romance? Every time I have to read about kissing her, how she likes what he does with his tongue, getting to second base, it's freaking distracting. We read horror for HORROR, for example, grandfather forcing him to see his grandmother naked is horrible. See? That's the kind of horror we like! That's freaky! Kissing a pretty girl isn't freaky, it's boring, specially in a book!
for a while I thought they would win , but I love how Claire finally realized she better help ..
Our protagonist isn't especially likeable at the beginning of the story, but he's a teenager. Teenagers aren't likeable in the first place. But his grandparents are so disturbing right off the bat that you're immediately behind him. Athan takes the stereotype of the sweet grandparent and flips it on its head. There's a good amount of tension throughout the book from beginning to end--and while this is definitely horrific, I wouldn't classify it as extreme horror because more attention was paid to characterization than ripping people apart. GRANDFATHER'S HOUSE was like a V.C. Andrews book on speed.
